How do I know, as a reflexologist, that I am making a difference?
- testimonials
- visual signs
- meaasurements
Although reflexology has been around for around 5,000 years, it has not got the research background that the younger conventional medicine world has.
I was reading an interesting piece of research undertaken by Portsmouth University of how reflexology reduces pain by around 40%.
This made me think about my own practice. I have lots of returning clients, testimonials, word of mouth recommendations, but how do “I know” I am making a difference.
Yesterday I met a new lady with a number of health issues, but one of the most startling was her left foot was literally purple from poor circulation. It was also icy cold. By the end of the session, that foot was warm and a normal pink colour.
Clients with high blood pressure often measure it before and after a session. The lowering of the blood pressure is incredible, and often stays down for a couple of days afterwards. I have had clients, with regular reflexology, have managed to reduce the dose of their medication (with GP advice).
I have a wonderful client with lymphoedema, a lifelong condition causing fluid buildup in her legs. With regular reflexology we have reduced the circumference of her feet and ankles by 5 cm. This has been duly noted by her lymphoedema team, amazed at the outcome being better than they have achieved. They fully support her decision to use reflexology alongside her conventional treatment.
And another client with a genetic progressive condition with no sensation in both feet and fixed rigid toes, now can feel a blister on his feet, can wriggle his toes, and has better balance when walking.
These are just a few examples to show why I do what I do.
If you have been thinking that you would like to try reflexology but not sure it would make any difference, I would say it does!
