Tonsillitis can be common in children, especially at this time of year. Knowing the symptoms is important for every parent:
The main symptoms in children and adults are:
•a sore throat
•problems swallowing
•a high temperature of 38C or above
•coughing
•a headache
•feeling sick
•earache
•feeling tired
Sometimes the symptoms can be more severe and include:
•swollen, painful glands in your neck (feels like a lump on the side of your neck)
•pus-filled spots or white patches on your tonsils
•bad breath
Treatment will depend on what caused your tonsillitis:
Most children and adults get viral tonsillitis (caused by a virus), which clears up on its own
for bacterial tonsillitis (caused by bacteria), a GP may prescribe antibiotics
A GP will usually wait for the test results to tell which type you have.
To help treat the symptoms:
•get plenty of rest
•drink cool drinks to soothe the throat
•take paracetamol or ibuprofen (do not give aspirin to children under 16)
•gargle with warm salty water (children should not try this)

Lessons for little ones
There’s no substitute for good adult supervision when it comes to young children and firework safety.
But it’s never to early to start teaching them how to stay safe around bonfires, fireworks and sparklers.
Read our simple safety messages below. And download these child-friendly safety tips from Fireman Sam.
Safety messages
Fireworks are exciting, but they can be very dangerous and can hurt you. Listen to your grown-up about where is a safe place to stand.
Never touch a firework. Don’t pick up a firework after it has been used.
Wear your gloves when you hold your sparkler and keep it away from your body.
It’s not a good idea to hold more than one sparkler at once.
Keep your sparkly sparkler safely away from other people and don’t run around with it.
Don’t throw your sparkler in case it hits someone.
Once your sparkler is finished, put it into a bucket of water, don’t pick it back up. It stays hot for a long time and can burn you.
Leave your dressing up clothes at home on fireworks night, wrap up warm instead.
Stand well away from the bonfire and stay close to the grown-ups.
Don’t be tempted to throw things into the bonfire or poke at it with sticks.
If you’re going to a firework display, hold hands with your grown-up and stay with them all the time.
If you catch your clothes on a flame, don’t panic – STOP, DROP and ROLL:
STOP what you are doing.
DROP to the ground and cover your face with your hands.
ROLL over and over to put out the flames.
Practice your STOP, DROP and ROLL before your fireworks celebrations.

The NHS recommends several ways to stay warm in the winter.
Heating your home: Heat your home to at least 18°C (65°F) in rooms you use regularly, like your living room and bedroom. If you're older, have a health condition, or aren't very mobile, you should heat your home to at least 18°C.
Close windows and curtains at night to keep heat in.
Wear several layers of thin clothing instead of one thick layer.
Staying active: Try to move around every hour. You can try walking up and down stairs, dancing, or taking part in online fitness class.
Eat at least one hot meal a day and have regular hot drinks.
Getting financial support: There are grants, benefits, and advice available to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating, or help with bills.
Preparing for the cold: Check the weather forecast and be ready for cold weather. Wear shoes with a good grip to prevent slips and falls.
