Hazel’s Helping Hands

Because care begins with kindness.

Today, I want to officially introduce Hazel’s Helping Hands — previously known as Bonnie Helping Hands — a service created to truly make a difference to elderly people, hospital patients, and their families across Dumfries & Galloway.

Not every person leaving hospital needs a full personal-care package. Many simply need a bit of help — and someone who genuinely cares. Someone to help them regain independence, to keep their home comfortable, or just to sit with them and share a cup of tea.

That’s what we do.

Hazel’s Helping Hands offers practical and compassionate support for those who want to remain at home but need a little extra assistance.

Our current services include:
• Companionship and sitting visits
• Housekeeping: cleaning, changing beds, dishes, laundry, and hoovering
• Shopping, medication collection, and local errands
• Pet walking and light gardening
• Meal and soup preparation with attention to good nutrition
• Home readiness before hospital discharge
• Transport home or to appointments (all staff fully insured for business travel)

These small acts of help make a big difference.

One of our clients, a lovely lady who was struggling after the loss of her husband, used to rely on daily medication because she felt anxious and alone. Now, she no longer takes it. She looks forward to her morning visits, her walks in the garden with her dog, and even baking again. All she needed was encouragement and company.

That’s the power of what we do.

Hazel’s Helping Hands is named in memory of my beautiful mum, Hazel, who I sadly lost in August exactly 12 weeks ago today after a long battle with scleroderma. For more than five years, I was privileged to care for her while running my own business. I saw firsthand how much difference compassion, company, and practical help can make.

Mum was the kindest soul, and she taught me that true care isn’t just about tasks — it’s about time, conversation, and kindness. This service carries her name and her spirit.

We know that families are stretched, people live far apart, and many simply can’t do it all — that’s where we step in. Whether you’re a family member, neighbour, GP, nurse, social worker, or friend, we welcome your referrals and your trust.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be recruiting new team members so that we can expand across the region and reach more people who need us.

If you know someone who could benefit, please get in touch or share this post to help spread the word.

Hazel’s Helping Hands – we’re here to make a difference.

In loving memory of my beloved mum ❤️ Hazel

🌿 Why Helping Hands Matters 🌿

This morning, I received a phone call from a truly broken-hearted daughter, desperately worried about her 92-year-old mum. Recently widowed, this remarkable lady had become lonely, frightened, and housebound. Despite still being capable of most of her daily needs, what she lacked most was companionship — someone to share a cup of tea with, to bake alongside, to help with small tasks like making a bed, hanging out the washing, or walking together through the beautiful garden she and her husband once built.

Her daughter had tried every avenue — social work, even care homes — because her mum was so lonely she felt her only option was to move away from home just to find company.

Today, Helping Hands was able to step in immediately. We arranged two hours of support every day — giving her the company and practical help she needs, and giving her daughter the peace of mind to return home knowing her mum is safe, supported, and cared for with kindness.

💚 In only the seven weeks since I lost my own mum, I know all too well the weight of caring for a parent who suddenly feels like the child. That phone call reaffirmed exactly why I started Helping Hands.

Our elderly community is growing, and with it the urgent need for services that don’t just “care” but bring dignity, friendship, and reassurance. I am so proud of what Helping Hands already is — and even prouder of what it will become.

✨ Because sometimes, what we need most isn’t a service — it’s a hand to hold, a friend to listen, and the confidence to keep going. ✨

We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Louise Watson to the Bonnie Group family.

Louise joins us as our Accounts & Administration Coordinator, bringing with her a wealth of personal and professional strengths that align beautifully with our values. Louise is not only a trusted friend of over 25 years, but someone I hold in the highest regard. Her patience, dedication, empathy, precision, honesty, kindness, integrity and respect are second to none.

In her role, Louise will be supporting across our accounts, admin systems, staff timesheets and rota coordination. She’ll be a vital part of ensuring our operations run smoothly behind the scenes and that our team is well-supported every step of the way.

Once Louise is settled in her role she will also reach out to be the point of contact for all our holiday home owners and clients for any rental or invoice queries and Louise will be reaching out to introduce herself to you all very soon

Please join me in giving Louise the warmest Bonnie welcome

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCMENT

Firstly, thank you to everyone who has supported Bonnie Helping Hands as we’ve begun to grow this heartfelt venture. Your kind words, encouragement, and belief in what we’re trying to do mean everything.

I’d like to take a moment to respond to some recent comments on a local post. Bonnie Helping Hands is a new community initiative built to support elderly and vulnerable individuals in their day-to-day lives — whether through home help, companionship, errands, or simply being a trusted presence when families can’t always be there.

I do not profess to know everything, but I am doing everything in my power to ensure we grow this service the right way — with transparency, accountability, and collaboration.

Over the past few months, I’ve had constructive and encouraging meetings with professionals in the sector, including the Care Facilitator at DGRI (NHS). These conversations are helping shape how we develop Bonnie Helping Hands, ensuring we are guided by those who know more than we do — because that’s how responsible services are built.

We are also working closely with the Carers Centre in Dumfries and are committed to learning from third sector professionals who are deeply experienced in the care and wellbeing of others. Our information and recruitment days are just one way we’re listening and evolving.

I want to be clear: every member of our team is PVG-checked, many are already working towards or hold SVQs, and where applicable, are registered with the SSSC. We are not a personal care company AT THE MOMENT — but we are here to help, and we are doing it properly. Alongside amazing staff yesterday who joined our recruitment day and hold all the relevant qualifications

While I appreciate constructive feedback, I will not tolerate personal attacks — particularly from those who may hold unrelated grievances. This project is rooted in compassion and community, and I would hope that any genuine concerns are brought to me directly and respectfully.

If anyone would like more information, or to speak with me directly, you are welcome to email: gillian@thebonniegroup.co.uk

We are here for the right reasons — and we are just getting started. 💚

With thanks and warmth,
Gillian Blaylock
