Oh my lord was this not just the last straw when it comes to pregnancy. You think you’re getting to the end of the body take over and you’re pushing on through to the end of the pregnancy marathon and WHAM! It feels like your baby has grown talons and is trying to claw their way out of your nethers! I would be waddling along quite happily when I was suddenly paralysed by the agony for what was only a couple of seconds but my goodness - f***y daggers is ACCURATE!

Well, I was always told it was the baby’s head irritating/ moving on the cervix. Ok fine but did my baby have razors on its head?!

I went on the most brilliant anatomy course last Friday at Keele University in Staffordshire. The type of anatomy course that would have been wasted on me as an undergrad because you don’t know what you don’t know at that stage. But PERFECT when you have been in the game for 23 years. No inhibitions, you want to know everything and can get specific and it’s a fantastic two way learning process between the healthcare professionals and the anatomy experts. Thank you so much and for putting this course together. I could do a lot more of these sessions.

Anyway, back to the f***y daggers. So, in the embryonic stage of our development there is a structure (let’s call it a ligament) called the Gubernaculum that guides the descent of the te**es (which start off in the upper abdomen area) into the sc***um in males, and in females, this structure develops into the suspensory and round ligaments of the ovaries and uterus. We know the round ligaments anchor the uterus to the abdominal wall but they actually carry on down and terminate in our l***a majora (which would have been our sc***um and house the te**is if we were male).

So in the 3rd trimester when our babies are packing on the pounds and in their grow phase, our uterus is expanding hugely. As it does this, the pull on the round ligaments is huge and therefore the tug/stretch/wrench in the l***a majora is felt as daggers or lightening.

? Old news ? Rubbish theory or bang on…. What do you think?

ACUPUNCTURE & DRY NEEDLING

I get asked a lot about how these two things work. So I’ve written a blog post which you can find on my website. It’s a summary of the key elements of acupuncture and its similarities and differences to dry needling.

I have been finding needling so useful in my practice for a range of patients over the last 20 years. Even in the pelvic health field.

If you are curious to find out more and how it may help you please do get in touch via my website which is linked in the bio.

🌸 “I thought getting back to running was taking care of myself. I didn’t know my body needed something different.”

14 years ago, I became a mum—and like many women, I was discharged from hospital with barely any advice on pelvic floor recovery.

By day 3 I was out walking.
By week 2, I was trying to run.
I felt heavy, unstable, in pain… but I kept going.

It wasn’t until my third pregnancy and a diagnosis of pelvic organ prolapse that I realised how little I truly knew about postnatal healing.

👉 Your recovery isn’t about “bouncing back.” It’s about rebuilding forward—with rest, breath, strength, and support.

💬 Has anyone ever told you what to expect postpartum? Let’s talk. You’re not alone.

Rehabilitation following significant knee injury. We have been doing brilliant work in a gym capacity with this lady and getting on really well. One of the things that she says is still holding her back is her distrust of the knee and its ability to support her. Using the Metis reaction lights we can target neuromuscular re-education, coordination and reaction time. These devices provide visual cues that prompt dynamic movements, encouraging the participant to perform targeted exercises that improve proprioception and joint stability and therefore accelerating the recovery process and reducing the risk of re-injury. If you feel there is an element of your rehab from injury that’s missing, please get in touch at www.bennettfitphysiotherapy.co.uk

Early rehab after ACL rupture and grade 2 MCL tear. You don’t need a gym to do meaningful rehab. Most of my clients need to be able to work out at home and it’s entirely possible.

My aim is to keep you moving through injury and to ensure that, that movement is challenging and reflects your end goal right from the beginning.

If you need help with rehab from an injury, this is my passion. Let’s get moving!

I LOVE getting in the gym with my patients. And I love getting in there early. I really want to show people what they can do despite being injured. I find this gives people motivation, courage and a big sense of achievement and often the boost they need to get them back in the game. People can see themselves getting back to their sport when they do something challenging early doors. It’s my absolute favourite thing.

Do you have an injury that’s stopping you feeling yourself or that you’ve largely recovered from but still feel something is missing? I’d love to help.

For appointments or just even a chat first please give me a bell or WhatsApp on 07591097318 or email bennettfitphysiotherapy@gmail.com

Pelvic organ prolapse and symptom severity don’t always match each other. By the is I mean, you might have a low grade pelvic organ prolapse but might feel it very intensely. Likewise you may have a higher grade of prolapse and have hardly any symptoms. The symptoms you feel are dependent on many factors such how tired you are, how stressed you are, how well fuelled your body is and also your hormone balance. After you have had a baby, your oestrogen reduces to levels lower than before you were pregnant. Oestrogen is like the elixir of life for connective and soft tissues. So when it’s low, these tissues don’t work so efficiently and can become irritated and sensitive making your awareness of your prolapse much worse. There are many things a pelvic health physio can do to help you reduce the sensitivity of these tissues, improve comfort and help you move and exercise with confidence again. If you think you have a prolapse or have been told you have one but it’s not that bad but your symptoms are worrying you, please get in touch. You don’t need to work it out alone.

I also specialise in female pelvic health which includes symptoms of incontinence, urinary frequency or urgency, pelvic organ prolapse, coccyx or pelvic pain or issues with bowels and constipation.

Please get in touch if you would like to discuss an issue on 07591097318.

It doesn’t matter how far post natal you are, a Mummy MOT will assess your posture, abdominal wall, pelvic health and issues specific to your pregnancy and birth story in order to give you the knowledge you need to start or enhance your journey back to sport and exercise after having a baby.

Many women will experience issues post-natal that they have been lead to believe are normal or something they just have to put up with. Often these issues stop them leading the active lifestyle they would choose. This is such a depressing situation to be in but it doesn’t need to be the case. Many of the issues we encounter can be significantly improved and often with very simple strategies.

If you would like to help the mum in your life or if you are the mum and would like to know more about the MummyMOT, please get in touch for email at bennettfitphysiotherapy@gmail.com or call/whatsapp me on 07591097318.

A Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal examination for women following both vaginal and caesarean deliveries. I, as your physio, will assess how your posture, pelvic floor muscles and tummy muscles are recovering after birth, and if there are areas that need some help then I can provide you with exercises and treatment to help with your recovery and to get you back to exercise and the demands of a busy mum life safely.
