In all the excitement this Halloween, children may want to tuck into their sweets whilst they’re on the move. But it’s best to avoid eating while walking or running, so you may want to save up all the treats to enjoy back at home.

Sitting down to eat massively reduces the risk of choking. Plus, don’t forget choking is silent. So be sure to watch children whilst they’re eating so you can react quickly if they get into trouble.

And, watch out for treats that are a higher choking risk for young children. Hard sweets, lollipops, mini-eggs and marshmallows are all common choking hazards.

Alzheimer Scotland have recently launched SafeConnect, in partnership with Police Scotland – a new safeguarding initiative to support people with dementia who may be at risk of going missing.

The SafeConnect fob is a small, yellow device that can be carried or attached to clothing. It holds secure emergency contact details and can be scanned with a smartphone using Near Field Communication (NFC) to help quickly reunite someone with their loved ones or carers.

After a successful pilot in Argyll & Bute and West Dunbartonshire, SafeConnect is now being rolled out, free of charge to anyone living with dementia across Scotland.

For more information on SafeConnect, please contact Rosemary by emailing: rmoncur@alzscot.org or call 0300 373 5774 (Monday – Friday 9am-5pm).
