"Mariah, Mariah, come watch about a woman who lives with the apes."
Those words from my mother defined my childhood and gave me my first true hero: Dr Jane Goodall.
The moment I saw her work, it wasn't a simple story—it was a seismic scientific and moral shift. Dr Goodall didn't just study chimpanzees; she revealed their sentient nature, their capacity for emotion, and the profound complexity of their social structures. That revelation stripped away all doubt and set the ethical cornerstone for everything I believe.
Dr Goodall taught the world that the line between human and animal is much blurrier than we ever imagined. She gave a voice to the voiceless and reminded us that every single one of us makes a difference every day. You choose how you make that difference.
To Dr Goodall: Thank you. Thank you for the courage you showed, for the love you gave, and for the tireless work that revolutionised our understanding of this beautiful, blue planet. Your legacy lives on in every person who chooses a more compassionate life.
You will be deeply, deeply missed.
