During deep tissue massage the therapist will apply more pressure. To enable the therapist to do this safely without causing injury to fingers and/or especially the thumb, we employ different tools:
The Palm-Covers a larger area than the fingers and pressure is deeper with less effort.
The Fist-When using the fist we use the surface area between the first and second joints of the fingers.
The Forearm-When applying the forearm, we use the fleshy side of the forearm. Tension can be increased by making a fist.
The Elbow-This is the deepest tool of all. Care must be taken to ensure we donβt go over any bony areas and cause discomfort.
Cam & Spindle-A favourite of mine!!!! We place the fingers and thumb of one hand around the thumb of the opposite hand and with both hands linked in this fashion, clench both hands to work over larger areas of the body, such as the thighs. Provides a really deep and satisfying stroke ππ»
