Being left on your own device following an operation can be difficult.

We have made a knee replacement recovery page that help you go through the first few weeks more easily.

The information given there come from questions patients asked us in the past and are often not answered until they come to see us at the clinic.

We will review the most common myths and share with you videos explaining how to:
manage post-operative pain,
ensure you maintain good movement,
how to use you crutches on flat surfaces and on stairs,
how to progress to walking without sticks or crutches, and,
when to start cycling, swimming and the gym.

Feel free to have a look and share it with whoever might need it!

Nope, your pelvis cannot get twisted or get "out of place". It just cannot happen. Let me explain... ๐Ÿ‘‡

The pelvis is formed of 3 bones (the "hip" bones and the sacrum). At the back, your SIJs (sacro-iliac joints) are the joints that connect the sacrum to the hip bones. These are big joints, and they are very strong.

Most importantly, there is very little movement in them โ€“ only 1 to 4 degrees, depending on the literature. So it is a myth to say that one's pelvis is out of alignment or out of place, unless you had a high-velocity traumatic shock, such as a massive car accident or a fall from a very high height. (And trust me, if your pelvis gets dislocated during that accident, your pelvis will be the least of your worries...)

So, your pelvis can't get twisted, but you can get SIJ pain.

SIJ pain is often misinterpreted as lower back pain. The low lumbar vertebrae (L4-L5) are very close to the SIJ, and the joints between the sacrum and L5 and then between L5 and L4 are a lot more mobile than the SIJ and are more likely to be the cause of the pain.

SIJ pain can be caused indirectly by
โ— back pain,
โ— hip pain,
โ— leg discrepancy,
โ— the nature of the sports you play
and directly by
โ— inflammation in the joint (in arthritic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis) or
โ— pregnancy, where the hormone prepares the pelvis to allow a baby's head to come through it in a few months.

So if you have been diagnosed with a twisted or misaligned pelvis, it is most likely nothing to do with your pelvis itself.

If you are in pain after being diagnosed with a twisted pelvis, give us a shout. We will assess you properly, look at the possible reasons for your pain and give you the appropriate rehab programme to help you get rid of it.

Had a break from your usual exercise routine or dealing with a ni**le? Here's how to ease back into activity safely. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Getting back into sport, exercise or even everyday activities can catch your body off guard. Muscles might be tight, tendons sensitive and balance or coordination a little off.

So, jumping straight in increases your risk of sprains, pulls or other injuries โ€“ and thatโ€™s exactly what we want to avoid.

Our top tips for staying injury-free:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Warm up properly
๐Ÿ‘‰ Address new aches and ni**les early
๐Ÿ‘‰ Increase training or activity gradually
๐Ÿ‘‰ Keep strength and conditioning in your routine
๐Ÿ‘‰ Respect rest and recovery days

Even everyday tasks โ€“ lifting, gardening or DIY โ€“ can challenge your body. Taking a steady, mindful approach now helps you stay active, prevent injuries and feel confident in your movement for months to come.

Take it steady, listen to your body, and stay consistent โ€“ your future self will thank you. ๐ŸŒŸ

Meet the team ๐Ÿ‘‹

Hear from Benji, owner of Benji Physio and physiotherapist:

I am a Frenchman who graduated in 2004 with a degree in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation (including a diploma in Massage Therapy) from ULB in Brussels, Belgium and moved to Scotland that same year.

After working for a couple of years as a junior physiotherapist for NHS Grampian, I started working in private practice, and for the following nine years, I developed and managed a clinic in Perth.

I founded Benji Physio in 2016. 10 YEARS AGO ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿคฏ

My training abroad has always been a great advantage, allowing me to combine the more hands-on approach (massage, mobilisations and manipulations) of the continent with the more exercise-based approach practised in the UK to offer a comprehensive and efficient way to assess and treat patients.

My post-graduate training is extremely varied. From the usual taping courses to very specialised back treatment courses, a foundation acupuncture course and a diploma in injection therapy, I am keen to learn new techniques and develop new skills. This will, of course, also be beneficial to my patients.

I am very proud to be trusted by local healthcare practitioners (GPs, podiatrists, etc.) and personal trainers to provide a second opinion for their patients/clients.

In addition to my clinical work, I worked for the Scottish Rugby Union as the U16 Caledonia physiotherapist for a few seasons and now offer ad-hoc physiotherapy and first aid cover. I am also a World Rugby FAIR first aid educator teaching Sports First Aid courses.

My love of anatomy is key to my interest in teaching, and I gave seminars to medical students at the Medical School of St Andrews University until 2020. I offer training to local GPS and nurses during their protected learning time.

Running Assessment

Understand why you keep getting injured when running and fix it!

How do we do it?

โ–ถ๏ธ Full running history: we will discuss weekly mileage, shoes, training, future competitions to get a picture of what you are trying to achieve and what is going wrong.

โ–ถ๏ธ Biomechnical assessment: Range of Movement and strength to eliminate any major discrepancy

โ–ถ๏ธ Functional assessment : we will run a battery of test (lunges, sit to stand, side plank, hops, etc ) to assess how you move

โ–ถ๏ธ Running gait assessment (sideway and back) using app: we will look at how you run (cadence, heel strike, torso position, pelvis drop, leg kicks, etc) .

โ–ถ๏ธ Results: we will gather the data collected in all the tests and show what's going.

โ–ถ๏ธ Programme: we will discuss a new running and strength (depending on your needs) which will allow to return/continue running injury-free.

Have you been given or tried to do stretches to treat your pain? It helped to start with but after trying for a few days/weeks, it does not seem to have the same effect (and by this you mean no effect...).

That's maybe because passive stretching rarely helps on their own. Although they can help for some conditions, most of the time they should be avoided. They are a rather complete waste of time.

Passive stretches may help with muscle and joint mobility but they will not improve muscle strength, proprioception and you ability to move the painful better.

To get rid of the pain, you need to move it, strengthen it, load it accordingly, make the joint/muscle/system work properly. Passive stretching will not do that.

Meet the team ๐Ÿ‘‹

Hear from Baden, one of our physiotherapists:

I am a physiotherapist with 20 yearsโ€™ experience, including 18 years working in sport, specialising in musculoskeletal injury and rehabilitation.

After qualifying, I relocated to Edinburgh, where I developed a strong clinical foundation through the NHS and roles in elite sport, including Edinburgh Accies Rugby and the Hibernian Academy. These experiences shaped my expertise in managing complex injuries and supporting high-performance demands.

My career has taken me across three continents and four countries, including Bermuda, the United States, and New Zealand, complemented by extensive international work with athletes and teams. A defining professional achievement was my role as Head of Athletic Performance for American Magic during the 2024 Americaโ€™s Cup, operating within a performance-critical setting demanding clinical precision and measurable results.

I continue to work remotely with professional and Olympic-level athletes, applying elite rehabilitation principles to clients of all levels โ€” whether the goal is returning to sport, recovering after surgery, or improving everyday movement.

I joined Benji Physiotherapy in May 2021, drawn to its strong client-centred ethos and commitment to high-quality care.

If youโ€™re ready to move better and recover with confidence, Iโ€™d be pleased to support your journey.
