Nope your pelvis cannot get twisted or get "out of place"... Your doctor, physio, consulatnt said it but it just CANNOT happen..
The pelvis is formed of 3 bones (the "hip" bones and sacrum). At the back, your SIJs (sacro-iliac joints) are the joints that unite the sacrum to the hips bones. These are big joints and are VERY strong.
There is in fact very little movements available in them, 1 to 4 degrees depending on the literature. So it is a total misconception to say that one's pelvis is OUT of alignment or out of place. It just cannot happen.
Well that's not completely true, it can happen after a high velocity traumatic shock such as massive car accident or a fall from a very high height. And trust me if you pelvis gets dislocated during that accident, your pelvis will be the least of your worries....
Anyway, your pelvis does NOT get out of place but you can get SIJ pain. In my personal opinion it is OVERDIAGNOSED as well but I cannot reference that. SIJ pain is often misinterpreted as lower back pain. The low lumbar vertebrae (L4-L5) are very close to the SIJ and the joints between the sacrum and L5 and then between L5 and L4 are a lot more mobile than the SIJ and are more likely to be the cause of the pain. But that's my opinion....
SIJ pain can be caused indirectly by back pain, hip pain, leg discrepancy, the nature of the sports you play and directly by inflammation in the joint (in arthritic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosis spondylitis) or pregnancy where the hormone prepare the pelvis to allow a baby head to come through it in a few months time.
So if you have been diagnosed with a twisted or misaligned pelvis, don't worry, it is most probably nothing to do with your pelvis itself.
If you are still in pain after being diagnosed with a twisted pelvis, give us a shout. We will assess you properly, look at the possible reasons of your pain and give you the appropriate rehab programme to help you get rid of it.
