Needle vs Cannula in Lip Filler – An Honest, Clinical Perspective
Lip filler techniques are something I’m often asked about, especially with so much content circulating online.
I’ve been practising aesthetics since 2009 and was trained in both needle and cannula techniques early in my career.
Over time, and with experience, I’ve chosen to predominantly use cannula for lips, and I’d like to explain why.
A needle is sharp and pierces blood vessels more easily. While many practitioners use needles confidently, they do carry a higher risk of bruising & vascular compromise, particularly in the lips, which are highly vascular.
A cannula is blunt. Rather than cutting through vessels, it tends to glide around them.
For me, this offers:
• Reduced risk of vascular occlusion
• Less trauma and bruising
• A more controlled, gentle placement of product
I must stress that NO technique is completely risk-free and I feel that it is important to be honest about .
My clinical judgement over many years has been to prioritise safety and tissue preservation over trends.
You may also hear about dissolving filler more frequently now. While dissolving has its place, it is not a benign procedure and should never be treated casually or as a routine “reset.” Prevention, correct placement, and conservative treatment are always preferable.
Aesthetics isn’t about copying what’s popular on social media, it is about understanding anatomy, respecting tissue, and making decisions that feel safe .
If you ever have questions about techniques, choices, or why I work the way I do, I’m always happy to talk as informed patients make the best decisions.
