Talking to your teen about drugs and alcohol doesn’t have to be a lecture and it doesn’t have to be scary. It might not seem like it, but your influence matters. Remember, you are the right person to talk to your teenager about drugs and alcohol.

Start with listening. Be curious, not confrontational. Try asking what they already know and how they feel, rather than jumping straight to warnings. Young people value honesty, and they’re more likely to trust you if you acknowledge uncertainty and real-life pressures.

Focus on safety, not punishment. Let them know they can come to you without fear if something goes wrong. And remember, one conversation isn’t enough. Keeping the door open matters more than getting it “right” first time.
