Ok, slightly personal post. Which I don’t often do. But I think that some people are so amazing that they need a huge thank you.

Many of you know my son Max. He has a lot of challenges. He is autistic and has a learning disability. He’s also quite unpredictable and has quite a lot of ‘behaviours that challenge.’

His favourite band are The Lancashire Hotpots He loves music, but is also very hypersensitive to sound so we have avoided ‘inside gigs.’

On Saturday we went to his first inside gig at The Cluny, Newcastle

We were very apprehensive. Considering that the weekend before we lasted about 6 mins in a restaurant before a meltdown, we were not expecting to be there for long. However…

Ross, the sound engineer deserves an OBE. He was so accommodating and made so many adjustments to make sure Max had a good time.

The Hotpots were amazing. All gave Max time, space and respect. It will genuinely be a night that he will never forget.

Their fans were equally amazing. All out to have a great night and make sure everyone had a great night.

And a special thank you to Jean who sat by Max for the gig and made him feel comfortable!

Unbelievably, we lasted the whole night and Max even got a photo with the band at the end of night.

A huge sigh of relief for us.

We need more of these people in the world, so you should now go and download their music, and go to the Cluny for a beer and a night out!

Huge congratulations to Northern Stores and Deli, the winners of Mary Kelly Foy MP's Small Business of the Year 2024!

We'd like to thank everyone who voted for us, too.

👑 SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR 2024 WINNERS 🏆

Congratulations to NEWHOUSE GENERAL STORE in Esh Winning for winning the people's vote and to Northern Stores and Deli for winning my new special recognition award for 2024.

I'm so pleased for the Newhouse Store team, as voting went on it quickly became very clear just how much this business means to the local community, particularly following the loss of Abdul Aziz in October. I'll look forward to seeing them on Monday to present their award and find out more about the business.

Today, it was great to stop by and see Matty and the team in Northern Stores and Deli. Much more than simply a shop, Matty engages with so many people from customers, residents, parish councillors, community groups and more. His business is a real hub in the city and much-loved by everyone who knows it. From various testimonies I received it was clear this business deserved some form of recognition, and I was only too pleased to provide it.

Well done to both businesses - and to everyone who got involved. This is one of my favourite initiatives every year and this year was no different. Let's continue to support our small businesses, they provide so many services and goods that don't compare to larger stores and online companies. ❤️

If you know me, you’ll know I love Small Business Saturday. Even though Storm Darragh will be causing some issues for our lovely indie businesses this weekend, I’m sure residents and visitors to Durham will be itching to get back out to support them once the awful weather has subsided.

Our small businesses truly are the lifeblood of our villages, towns and city and I show my support every year, particularly with my Small Business of the Year award. If you haven’t already voted for your favourite this year, don’t delay and do it today! 100s of votes have flown in since voting opened yesterday, let’s make sure our small businesses know how much we appreciate them!
