Happy Mother’s Day to the horsey mums and the non-horsey mums, to mums who didn’t choose the horse mum life but it chose you and the mums who have given their kids the horsey addiction.

Well done for raising a horse daft kid and surviving the bills. Enjoy your Mother’s Day 💜

Do you have a weakness, injury or deficit that may affect your symmetry while riding? One of our MSc students is conducting research into how rider asymmetry may influence how your horse performs under saddle.

We'd appreciate if you could spend 15 mins completing this survey. All answers are anonymous!

Thank you.

Its not always a big change…

Sometimes the change is subtle within a rider physio session but this can be a massive help to your horse.

On the left is the start of the session with Caroline Frew, Chartered Physiotherapist. The end of the session (right) shows less trunk rotation.

The issues identified were:

issues:
▪️Weaker through right hip & trunk
▪️ Poor right upper limb proprioception & rein connection
▪️ Compensating with left trunk rotation / overactivity on left

Treatment involved a
combination of off horse strengthening & on horse cues.

Roses are red,
Your vet bills are high,
You spooked at a leaf
And I thought I would die.

But your nose is so squishy,
Your ears are so sweet,
I’ll forgive every time
That you stepped on my feet.

Happy Valentines Day ♥️

Riders have a genuine concern right now that their horses aren’t fit enough to attend training. Coaches are highly trained and experienced individuals and can tailor any session to yours and your horses fitness level.

There is numerous physical and psychological benefits of slowing it all down and spending time improving the walk work, incorporating lateral work, focus on poles or working on transitions.

You can also book a shorter session, share with a friend and include an extra break to lighten the load.

Cardiac capacity is most likely to limit the training session rather than musculoskeletal fatigue. So keep the intensity low and you are sure to benefit from training with your coach. Be honest about your fitness levels and let the coach guide you.

Top tips for injury prevention ⬇️

Warm up for 5-10 minutes using dynamic movements before activity to prepare muscles and joints. Ensure you cool-down afterward to aid recovery.

Gradually increase your activity to avoid overuse. Avoid sudden increases in intensity, duration, or frequency of training to prevent overuse injuries.

Do not ignore pain or fatigue. Take rest days, especially if you experience persistent soreness or aches.

Sometimes the “old fashioned” techniques can be just as good as more modern approaches.

Soft tissue therapy plays a crucial role in maintaining overall well-being and performance. By targeting muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia can help improve flexibility, reduce pain, and promote faster recovery from injury or strain.

Regular treatment can prevent long-term issues, improve posture, and support optimal movement.

Following assessment your therapist can apply treatment that targets specific areas of tension, discomfort, or injury. Manual techniques, like trigger point release, massage and reflex inhibition can encourages blood circulation, reduces muscle stiffness, and promotes relaxation.

Trained therapists can feel the horse’s muscle tone and assess any areas of tightness or soreness, offering immediate feedback and the ability to adjust treatment in real time.
