What is Equine sports massage? Equine sports massage is used to maintain performance and prevent musculoskeletal problems. Equine sports massage can be used to treat muscular problems, therefore enhancing the horse’s performance. Veterinarians will often refer horses for massage treatment. My services can be performed before or after an event as well as used as maintenance for the horse or alongside rehabilitation. Due to more followers, here is another introduction about myself and the services I offer:

In 2016 I graduated the BSc (Hons) Equine sports therapy and rehabilitation degree.
I then studied an additional course to learn the manual technique involved for equine sports massage.

Since 2016 I have helped with many rehabilitation successes in DDFT and ligament injuries, Cervical and thoracic spine changes, SI inflammation, and many other injuries.

I also focus on keeping the ridden / competitive horse and also retired horses feeling supple and free from muscular restriction.

Muscular tension can show with common discomfort signs such as crib biting, refusing, bucking, evading but also by presenting as being ‘lazy’. Sometimes the signs are not always obvious.

I attend shows and tend to be at the summer stay aways within the showjumping and dressage circuit. So I will be available at these this year as well as normal non-show bookings.

March is looking busy!

Joining in on the AI Trend.

Life as an Equine Massage therapist is certainly relaxing and rewarding. Today consisted of seeing a few maintenance Massage sessions and then one rehabilitation client which needed red light for a ligament injury.
I will be seeing this one weekly to help promote healing.

I do love my job, being able to help owners understand every aspect of training their horses and also explaining rehabilitation and how the horses body works. Being able to help top competitors understand their horses needs, is so rewarding.
I love working alongside vets with rehab cases. And I love seeing the success.

When a horse has a repetitive area of tension, it is important to eliminate tack issues, lameness and rider balance.

If the rider has an area that is sore such as their back on one side, let’s say the left, this is when tension can occur on the left side of the back for the horse.

How?
Transference.
If a rider is uncomfortable on the left side of their back they are going to put more weight on the right. Meaning the horse will find it difficult to bend to the left as the rider will be putting more weight on the right and restricting the left bend by not putting any leg aid on the left side, this will then create excess tension on the left side of the back muscles for the horse.

Also a rigid rider means a horse won’t be able to bend with suppleness.

It’s easy to think it’s the horse falling through the shoulder. What we should be asking is why? Evaluate your position and pains. You could be making your horse wonky 🐎

❄️ Cold Weather = Higher Risk of Impaction Colic ❄️

As temperatures drop, the risk of impaction colic in horses increases. Winter management plays a big role in keeping equine digestive systems healthy—here’s what every horse owner should know 👇

🐴 What is Impaction Colic?

Impaction colic occurs when dry, firm feed material becomes stuck in the horse’s intestine, usually in the large colon. This blockage slows or stops normal gut movement, causing pain and potentially serious complications if not treated promptly.

🚨 Signs of Impaction Colic

Signs can range from mild to severe and may include:
• Reduced or absent manure production
• Dry, hard f***s
• Decreased appetite
• Lethargy or depression
• Pawing, stretching, or looking at the flank
• Lying down more than usual or difficulty getting comfortable

Always contact your veterinarian if colic is suspected.

🧊 Why Does Cold, Freezing Weather Increase the Risk?

Cold conditions contribute to impaction colic for several reasons:
• Reduced water intake: Horses often drink less when water is cold or frozen
• Drier diets: Increased reliance on hay with less moisture than pasture
• Decreased gut motility: Less movement and colder temperatures can slow digestion
• Frozen or limited water sources: Even short periods without adequate water can lead to dehydration

Dehydration + dry feed = higher risk of intestinal blockage.

✅ How to Help Prevent Impaction Colic
• Ensure constant access to fresh, unfrozen water (ideally lukewarm in winter)
• Monitor daily water intake and manure output
• Soak hay or feeds if recommended by your vet
• Encourage regular movement and turnout
• Make dietary changes gradually
• Schedule routine dental care and parasite management

Cold weather doesn’t have to mean colic risk—with good management and close observation, you can help keep your horse healthy all winter long 💙🐎

Did you know that the older horse can’t regulate its body temperature as well as it used to in their younger days?

With predicted -temperatures hitting the UK this week please use a suitably weighted rug, supply lots of hay and check that they are warm enough.

Turnout with sunshine is the best way for a horse to warm up as moving will increase the blood flow.

One of the main reasons that they can’t regulate their body temperature too well is that the cardiovascular system doesn’t work as effectively.

So keep them warm, eating and moving 👏🏻

A little post to say that I hope all of my lovely clients have a Christmas full of love and laughter 🎄 remember to spoil your horses with lots of carrots and rides to their favourite hacking spots.
