What is Equine sports massage? Equine sports massage is used to maintain performance and prevent musculoskeletal problems. Equine sports massage can be used to treat muscular problems, therefore enhancing the horse’s performance. Veterinarians will often refer horses for massage treatment. My services can be performed before or after an event as well as used as maintenance for the horse or alongside rehabilitation. As well as equine musculoskeletal therapy Abbott Equine Therapy is offering schooling, rehabilitation and full livery services. Please don't hesitate to contact me for more information:

Rest time and days off for the horse and the rider are so important 🫶🏻

Horses need to unwind just like we do.

The reality now unfortunately, is that most horses don’t get a winter break because of the winter shows. Rossi had a much needed break in August where he enjoyed the field.

The more time they have to themselves, and having rest days after a ridden session, really helps their whole body relax. Prevents repetitive strain and mental fatigue.

Think rest alongside work 😍

The Dorsal chain refers to the extensor group of muscles.

Signs of a tight and restricted Dorsal Chain include:
Difficulty maintaining a contact
Difficulty rolling over
Bucking
Refusing jumps
Jumping hollow
Decreased suppleness in lateral work
Head shaking
And the list goes on!

Best ways to maintain suppleness include massage, stretches, varied work, in hand work, pole work.

If you feel your horse meets the above criteria, please get in contact 🐴

Why should you choose Abbott Equine Therapy?

Every horse I meet, is seen for who they are, which means each therapy session is tailored to each individual horse. I have a lot of experience with “tricky horses” meaning that I don’t say no to a horse that maybe shy or uncertain which normally comes across by the horse as rude or aggressive in some people’s eyes…

I share my knowledge to owners in hope to reassure them and also to become part of a team, to get the best from the horse by understanding its needs.

I love everything to do with biomechanics, which means I can share why certain tensions have occurred but also hold training session to help the rider, ride to their horses way of going.

I’m not just in this for a session, I’m in this for the journey. Many of my clients have been using my services since I started 9 years ago. I’m a message away for any advice needed at any given time.

I’ve even been out in the evening and responded to an urgent message for a session to be booked for the following day.

I’m in this role because I care. So if you are looking for a therapist like the one above, please don’t hesitate to message me.

I offer massage, red light therapy, kinsiology taping, acupressure, biomechanics, stretches and much more including rehabilitation plans.

⭐️Notice⭐️ I will now be taking a deposit when booking. This will then be deducted from your booked session. If a cancellation is made, this deposit will be taken as a cancellation fee or moved to your next session. I am a small business, therefore last minute cancellations do make an impact unfortunately, especially when payment is not received.

It was so nice to see Charlie and Dewi again yesterday, they have been enjoying their jumping recently and Dewi always benefits from his routine sessions every couple of months. I also saw a new client on the yard an Appaloosa called Star, who was very sweet. With a few more new ones to book on my next visit. This is a review that Charlie has left me;

“Couldn’t recommend Charlotte enough!
She has been treating my horse for a while now and I have noticed such a difference. She always picks up on things which explain my horses way of going like tightness in certain areas and always has advice and exercises to help improve. We are going from strength to strength thanks to Charlotte. Thank you so much xx”

Rugging your horse this winter – where do you start? ❄️

We know it can feel overwhelming deciding what rug to put on your horse, especially as the seasons change. That’s why we’ve put together this Rugging Guide, inspired by British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA), to give you a rough framework to work from.

But REMEMBER, every horse is an individual:
🐴 Some horses feel the cold much more than others.
🐴 Clip type, condition, weight and age all play a big role.
🐴 Don’t forget the weather! A wet and windy day can feel much colder than a crisp, dry one (the chill factor makes a huge difference!).

👉 Our chart offers general recommendations for stabled vs. turned out horses, and whether they’re clipped or unclipped, but it’s not one-size-fits-all. What works for one horse may not suit another.

The best advice? Use this as a guide, but always check your horse by feeling under their rug, monitoring how comfortable they are individually and using common sense. 💙

Do you find your horse is the type who needs an extra layer, or are they usually happy with less? Let us know in the comments! 👇

It’s National Animal Therapist Day!

I have been in this career for 9 years and despite having a degree, I can honestly say you learn so much more on the job too!
I’ve loved every minute. I’ve always wanted to be able to help animals. Whether it’s musculoskeletal or behavioural. Anxiety is something I come across a lot in the horse world within the horse itself. It’s something that I’ve always helped the owner with. Listening is key.
I look forward to helping many more clients with their horses. They truly are special animals 💫

For those who might not have heard of me before, my services include:

Sports / Remedial massage
Red Light Therapy
Kinsiology tape
Behaviour sessions
Ridden analysis (biomechanics)
Continued support after sessions
Pole work for suppleness
