Did you know that each contraction will only last between 30 and 60 seconds?
When you realise that each contraction will be over in a matter of seconds, it can make them much easier to manage.. and once it’s over and done with you’ll never have to do that contraction again!

As well as these amazing benefits, skin to skin is also a great way for you and your partner to bond with your baby. Having skin to skin contact, triggers the release of oxytocin, which helps you bond with baby by sparking feelings of love and protectiveness 💕

Things I have learnt from my own feeding journey,

🌸 Educate yourself beforehand, if breastfeeding is something you want to do, seek out the right support and education. It doesn’t always come as easily as you may think and sometimes there are obstacles

🌸 Ask for help. If you’re struggling with feeding then please reach out for help. There are lots of amazing resources available to you including breastfeeding clinics and cafes, breastfeeding support workers, health visitors, midwives

🌸 Make sure you’re surrounded by people who support you. The early days can be exhausting and having the right people around you to help with chores, cooking and helping out with other children can be priceless. It also gives you the space to focus on you and baby without as many distractions

When people tell you you’re ‘creating a rod for your own back’ because you feed your baby to sleep, you can kindly remind them that its biologically normal to do so!
Not only are our bodies encouraging baby to sleep, they’re also helping baby to feel calm and safe ❤️

Breastfeeding is about more than just food.
Your baby will also want to be close to you for comfort, warmth and to feel safe. It may feel as though you can’t put them down for more than 5 minutes but it doesn’t last forever. The first weeks are hard but they are worth it. 💕

VERNIX CASEOSA

Have you ever wondered what the thick, white substance all over a newborn baby is?
It’s called vernix caseosa and it’s there for a few reasons!

This coating develops whilst the baby is still in your womb.

💦 You know when you spend too long in the bath and your skin goes all wrinkled? Well, of course your baby will be submerged in amniotic fluid for approximately 40 weeks. Vernix works to protect the skin and prevents it from going wrinkly.

💗 Vernix contributes towards the softness of a babies skin as well as keeping it safe from infection whilst in the womb.

🤰 The amount of vernix on the skin decreases the closer you get to your due date. It’s normal for full term babies to have it on their skin, but if you deliver past your due date, they may have significantly less vernix.
Premature babies usually have more vernix caseosa than full term babies.

What are the benefits of vernix?
🤍 It has antibacterial properties, helping to protect the skin from infection
🤍 Can act as a lubricant to make it easier for baby to come through the birth canal
🤍 Helps to regulate a babies body temperature after birth
🤍 Contributes to softer, smoother skin after delivery. Don’t wash it off! Instead, rub it into the skin, it’s a natural moisturiser

What is transition?

🖤 The point in labour when your cervix starts to fully dilate

🖤 You are hit with a rush of adrenaline to wake you up and push you through

🖤 You may declare that you ‘can’t go on anymore’

🖤 This is the last part of labour and your baby will be with you soon

🖤 It’s the perfect time for your birth partner to encourage you and remind you of your hypnobirthing techniques
