As the weather turns colder, you might not be thinking of flowers, but this daisy can help prevent serious burns. 🌼

Did you know that on the neck of every hot water bottle is a daisy which shows when it was manufactured? Once a hot water bottle is more than 2 years old, the rubber or PVC can begin to degrade, crack or leak, increasing your risk of getting injured, so it is important to know how old yours is before you use it.

These simple steps can prevent painful injuries:
✅ Always check the manufacturing date stamped on your hot water bottle.
✅ If it’s more than 2 years old, replace it – even if it looks fine.
✅ Never use boiling water, and avoid overfilling.

Stay warm, stay safe. ❄️

From 7am on Friday 14 November until 7am Wednesday 19 November there is a period of planned industrial action by Resident Doctors (formerly known as Junior Doctors) who are members of the British Medical Association (BMA).

During this time our senior doctors, nurses and other clinical staff will be ensuring we continue to provide urgent and emergency treatment, including time critical surgery. Our minor injuries unit at QVH will also be open as usual from 8am to 8pm - more information available here https://www.qvh.nhs.uk/our-services/minor-injuries-unit/

Patient care remains our priority. We will only reschedule appointments and procedures where necessary and will re-book immediately, where possible. If you are due to come to an appointment please continue as planned unless we have contacted you.

The NHS is asking patients to choose services wisely during the industrial action and take simple steps to help ensure care is available to patients who need it most. This includes using 111 online as the first port of call for health needs and continuing to only use 999 if it is a life-threatening emergency.

At 11am our staff will be pausing for two minutes of silence, where it is clinically safe to do so, to remember those who have given their lives in conflicts. Patients and visitors are welcome to do the same.

Today is World Radiography Day, with 2025 marking 130 years since x-rays were first discovered by German physicist Wilhelm Rontgen. 🩻

Radiography professionals across the world use this day to promote and show people what radiology is. Even with the introduction of other modalities such as CT (1970s), MRI (1980s) and Ultrasound (1960s), Plain x-ray images are still useful today and are most commonly the first line investigation for patients with a variety of conditions.

Here at QVH, our lovely team celebrated with a handy information stand for patients and colleagues to learn more about radiography, and even decorated their offices for the occasion!

Thank you to our wonderful Radiology department for all that they do and the pivotal role they play in early detection, diagnosis and treatment of our patients. 💙

This week has marked Occupational Therapy Week, with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists focus for this year being ‘Right Support, Right Time: Unlocking the Power of OT’, exploring how people can stay well for longer. 🧩

Members of our Occupational Therapy team set up their own activity table in our Spitfire Restaurant yesterday, helping colleagues, patients and visitors to learn more about the power of occupational therapy.

Anyone who stopped by was encouraged to contribute to their ‘aid to staying well’ display and consider what things can help keep us healthy, and also had the opportunity to try out an adapted ADL (activity of daily living) for more insight into how occupational therapy can help people regain independence in everyday tasks. 💙

You can read more about Occupational Therapy Week on the RCOT website: https://www.rcot.co.uk/support-the-profession/campaigns/ot-week/ot-week-2025

Remember, remember, on the 5th of November…to stay safe on Bonfire Night! 🎆

There are a lot of bonfire and/or firework celebrations taking place in our local area over the next few days, so if you’re attending one then please take care.
Our burns, plastic surgery and corneoplastics teams see both children and adults injured by fireworks, some with life-long scars and injuries.

If you're attending a display or doing fireworks at home, please make sure that you follow key safety advice. 🎇

Our friends at NHS Sussex have put together a helpful guide to ‘choosing well’ this Bonfire Night, which you can read here: https://www.sussex.ics.nhs.uk/nhs-sussex-urges-residents-to-stay-safe-and-choose-well-this-bonfire-night/

Today we are launching our new electronic patient record (EPR), named Archie EPR in honour of pioneering surgeon, Sir Archibald McIndoe. 🎉

Our QVH colleagues have been incredible in helping us mobilise this change, with over 120 Digital Champions ready to support peers and ensure a seamless integration of the EPR system, and floorwalkers on hand 24/7 to make sure everyone has the support they need.
If you spot a lot of pink t-shirts around our site today and throughout the week, that’s why! 👚

There has been a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes to help QVH in its digital transformation journey whilst we continue to provide safe and effective care to our patients. Thanks also to Altera Digital Health who have supported us throughout.

Please do bear with us whilst we introduce Archie EPR, and feel free to speak to a member of staff if you have any questions. 💙
