C sections can be incredibly positive experiences - and being prepared can really help
I had a few clients recently whose birth stories have really resonated with me. I often ask how having an emergency c section makes them feel and often people say that they felt completely unprepared. Many of us don't even include them as part of our birth plans - the birthing method 'be avoided at all costs'.
We are often surrounded by negative c section stories, issues and complications with healing, struggling to recovery. In fact this isn't limited to c sections - how many of us during our pregnancies only seem to hear the negative birth stories, creating anxiety and avoidance? I remember that the NHS birthing manual had a chapter on c sections - parked at the end as if it were an afterthought. I avoided it - never read it. I thought by reading it I would be tempting fate, rather than actually educating myself. No one even suggested that I might want to read it 'just in case'.
What one client said to me was that if she had been more prepared and educated, she would have been less anxious and devastated when that decision had to be made. She had visions of being bed bound for days, not realising that for most people, even though it's major surgery, movement is possible, good and beneficial for the recovery.
Although I was unprepared for my c section, I can actually honestly say that my physical recovery went smoothly. And the vast majority of women I see for c section scar work have had no issues with the healing, but are just looking for advise, reassurance and empowerment.
More and more these days we are getting our information and education from social media. If this is the case then we also have a duty to shout out about positive birth stories and tips and advise on early recovery to help and support each other. That way we can help prepare people for unplanned c sections - planning for the unplanned! - supporting those who find themselves struggling.
