🌡️ Baby body temp

🥶 Why do babies get cold so easily?

🌸 Babies aren’t just small - they’re built differently:
They have thin skin and less fat
Newborns have thin skin and very little of the fat that generates heat. This makes them lose heat quickly.

🌸 They have an immature nervous system -
The part of the brain that controls temperature isn’t fully developed in infants which means their body can’t adjust as efficiently to temperature changes through shivering or sweating.

🌸 Babies have a high surface-area-to-volume ratio -
They lose heat faster than adults simply because there’s more surface area for heat to escape.

🌸 They have immature blood flow control -
Adults can constrict blood vessels in the skin to conserve heat, but infants’ vasoconstriction response (where the blood vessels narrow reducing blood flow near the surface of the skin to keep blood warm in the core of the body) is weak, so heat escapes more easily.

🌸 So make sure you wrap your baby up on these cold days ensuring they don’t get too hot. The best way to check if they are getting too warm is to check the temperature of their neck or chest and if it feels warm or clammy remove a layer. And remember, hats are just for outdoors. They should be removed once you’re inside.

Help your child become a safer pedestrian. 🕹️🚸

The THINK! team has created a fun, interactive online game for children aged 7 to 12 years.

In ‘Take the Lead’, players help guide their virtual character to school safely, learning key road safety skills along the way.

It takes just 10 minutes and is a great way to start conversations about road awareness at home.

👶🏼 SIDS

🌸 Did you know that following a few simple sleep steps can make a huge difference in reducing the risk of SIDS? Since the Back to Sleep campaign started in 1991, rates have dropped by over 84%!

🌸 Here are some practical tips:

✅ Back to Sleep: Always place your baby on their back in a safe space with a firm, flat mattress. Keep the crib or bassinet in your room.

✅ Smoke-Free Zone: Don’t smoke during pregnancy and keep your baby away from smoke. Over a third of SIDS cases could be avoided if this is followed.

✅ Safe Co-Sleeping: If you’re sharing a bed, avoid it if you’ve been drinking, are extremely tired, a smoker, or using drugs. Sleeping on sofas or armchairs with your baby is never safe.

✅ Keep Comfortable: Babies shouldn’t get too hot or cold. Keep the room around 16–20°C, avoid hats in bed, and check if your baby’s chest or neck feels too warm.

✅ Breastfeeding Benefits: If possible, breastfeed for at least 2 months as it can halve the risk of SIDS. The longer you continue, the more protection it offers.
