Who am I to judge how you get your exercise? Wade about in a filthy ditch if you must but I won't be joining you! Check out those legs on my Mutley!😳

Maybe it's zumba, tennis or walking; gym sessions, aquaerobics or Swoove - chose what you love and do it as often as possible. You need to put the time in to look after yourself because no one else can.

If you need some help getting back to those active things you love and miss maybe I can help. I won't shove the exercise regime at you (unless you want that) but we can find sensible ways to get you back at it.

AND....there are the added benefits to mental, bone, heart, hormonal and brain health (to name just a few) that you get from moving. So, let's do it - but in a sensible way with support! It's a win win situation.

What are your health goals today? And what are the longer term ones?

Today exercise motivation was pretty non-existent - I'd been utterly soaked in the rain 4 times; had a stream of tedious admin jobs and I achieved next to nothing.
The only way I could face exercise was to make it brief. So it called for a warm-up and then a nourish move love 15 minute full body work out. As the warm-up had perked me up a little I was able to use slightly heavier weights - knowing it would all be over soon. And it was.
Then I had a lovely stretch concentrating on STIFF hips (which I wouldn't have done had I plonked on the sofa).
Finally, dinner - which could have been a toast fest - was a colourful plate of veg with houmous straight from the pot.
My mood is more lifted, focus more focused and my body benefitted by some exercise and good food.
I'm now going have that bit of chocolate my husband bought me.
Sometimes you gotta keep it easy and give yourself a pat on the back for job only half done. Better half done that not done at all.

So, exercise is all about weight loss, your heart and your muscles?

Wrong!

It's good for your brain too.

I've been reading a book by Nicole Vignola, who studied Neuroscience at Bristol University. We think exercise is all about cardio-vascular health, strong muscles; shedding a few pounds but there are other great reasons to exercise.

1. The increased blood flow around the whole body helps oxygenate and nourish the brain and is neurons;
2. Exercise helps release feel-good hormones such as dopamine and serotonin - helping reduce depression;
3. It stimulates the body's own pain killers (endorphins are released);
4. It helps us deal better with stressful situations;
5. It helps reduced inflammation in the body;
6. It enhances co-ordination, balance and agility to stave off physical effects of neurodegenerative diseases (stiffness, shakes etc);
7. It boosts grey-matter volume in the brain and helps with memory;
8. Mitochondria (the power houses in all cells) increase in numbers helping with energy, mood and neurotransmitter regulation;
9. It distracts us from stress as we have to concentrate and focus - 'reboots' our thoughts.

So, get up, shame it out and get moving to help your brain - you'll feel so much better for it.

This is one of my favourite rehab exercises to engage the core muscles and help with low back pain. This is such a great exercise as it is generally fine for most people to do and it is surprisingly hard - the lower the knees are the harder it seems to be. There are plenty of modifications possible too so it can progress as you do.

I've been working with older patients; worried patients; over-worked patients; injured patients; traumatised patients this week and I couldn't be luckier.
They have been the most amazing group of strong, wise and wonderful people I could ever wish to spend time with. Thank you for being part of my working week.
And....my last patient this afternoon brought me my favourite tea too! Result!

My 'exercise machine' posing for a pic here today. It's easy to think it's just a dog walk but the consistent exercise it adds to my life is pure gold - hills for cardio, hills for leg strengthening, sunny views for awesome mental wellbeing. Thank you, Pepper, we've clocked up a good few steps today, all provided by TheNaturalHealthService.
Whether it's dancing, gardening, dog-walking or playing with the grandkids - all the active minutes count towards a healthier you. Enjoy every moment and keep at it.

A patient came to see me with back pains, sore shoulders and, unknowingly, this nasty mole. She had no idea....well, who gets to see their back very often? Best to get it checked.
The dermatologist subsequently said 'it’s almost certainly a melanoma but that it’s in the early stages and confined to the top layer of skin meaning it’s grade 0 and will be totally removed with surgery.' Phew!

Please keep an eye on moles and get someone to help you to check especially backs, ears, scalps, backs of arms and legs.

What to look for?👀 Use ABCDE as a check list for dodgy moles:
- Asymmetric shape;
- Border with a jagged edge;
- Colours may be uneven or multiple;
- Diameter is usually +6mm;
- Evolving and changing.

Please check this link for a full description https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/melanoma/symptoms.

In this case the mole was tiny but much darker than all other moles and had the irregular shape and jagged edge. Enough to raise concerns.

Please look after yourselves everyone - have a little check over today and maybe share this post to help remind others to do the same.

I've been too busy to post about work of late but this pic is quite amazing and worth sharing.
I've been looking after this patient pre- and post-op (check put those screws on the heel bone) to help all the bits of the body that have been working hard with an altered gait; altered centre of gravity; and now wearing a huge orthopaedic boot and hobbling about on crutches - hips, other foot and ankle, low back and now shoulders and neck.
They've shown such bravery in the face of pain and inconvenience. I wish I had a magic wand sometimes to speed patients through their recovery - this lovely one would definitely get a swoosh. In its absence though I hope all the hands-on care and cheering on from the side lines does the trick. There has been such improvement already. The body is a healing machine if it has the chance.
