What a lovely message to receive from the slopes! Jeff had a Hamstring tear, we worked on education regarding his injury and initially some k-taping for support. Then we moved on to a stretching and progressive strengthening programme to get him fit for the slopes. Amazing work.

A great article received from the Physio Network.

HAMSTRINGS & THE ACL

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is an extremely important ligament in terms of overall knee integrity and stability. Specifically, the ACL connects the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone) and runs at an oblique angle from the posterior aspect of the femur to the anterior aspect of the tibia. Due to this arrangement, the ACL is responsible for preventing anterior translation of the tibia or posterior translation of the femur.

Now, many of us are aware of the importance of the quadriceps to knee health, but, often times, the hamstrings get neglected. The hamstrings run along the posterior (backside) of the thigh and insert onto the posterior surfaces of the tibia and fibula (shin bones). When contracting, the hamstrings work to bend the knee, but also pull the tibia posteriorly. In this way, the hamstrings can serve as a dynamic protector of the ACL by limiting excessive anterior displacement of the tibia and strain on the ligament.

If you are looking to reduce your risk of ACL injury or recovering from an ACL reconstruction, don't forget to include hamstring work in your strength training program as this group has an instrumental role in protecting the ACL.

I carried out a Functional Movement Screening and Fitness Testing session with the Diamonds Netball Club recently, this type of session is commonly used in sports teams to look at someone’s movement in a functional capacity and highlight additional adjustments or movements that they make in order to achieve a specified activity or exercise.

An example could be leaning forwards or sideways in order to stabilise and maintain balance when performing a squat. This could indicate reduced performance or poor technique and be a less efficient way to move in their sport and potentially lead to a greater injury risk.

Fitness testing is a series of measurements taken to help determine the health status and physical fitness of an individual.

A baseline measurement is first taken and training is then structured around both the fitness test and functional movement screening scores which will be used when developing a training programme used to enhance individual and team performance, address poor or additional movement patterns and reduce the likelihood of injury.

Here is the Diamonds Netball Club being put through their paces with some testing.

Well done ladies, you were all amazing!
