HAYFEVER 🌹
Spring has sprung (thankfully) and with that comes the ever looming threat of a scratchy throat, sneezes and a runny nose.
For voice users who suffer with hayfever and allergies it can be a tricky time to navigate.
Here are useful tips to help you keep your voice happy during this period:
🌷 Drink plenty of water - when suffering with allergies and hayfever, hydration is super important, especially if you are taking allergy medication. These medications can dry out the vocal tract and sinuses, so to keep your voice happy keep your hydration up sipping little and often throughout the day.
🪻Steam and nebulise - topical hydration is key to keeping your vocal folds happy. When allergies strike your vocal folds can become inflamed and unhappy, leading to a scratchy throat and hoarse voice. Steaming or nebulising will help to soothe the vocal tract and give the vocal folds the much needed hydration they deserve.
Remember to use saline solution for a nebuliser and boiling water (let it cool for a few minutes before use) for steaming.
🌸 Nasal/Sinus rinse - great for helping to clear any excess mucous in the nasal cavity and clear away any unwanted irritants that might be sitting at the back of your nose.
We use the NeilMed sinus rinses. Available online or in most chemists.
🌷 Saline nasal spray - super handy for keeping the nasal cavity hydrated and clearing out excess mucous when you aren’t able to do a full nasal rinse. These are different from decongestant nasal sprays, which, whilst being helpful in moments of congestion, can also be very drying to your voice. If you’re looking for a saline nasal spray, make sure it only contains either saline or salt water. These are available at most chemists.
