I know therapists and counsellors from many parts of the world and knowing so many are in precarious positions right now due to oppressive, nearly authoritarian regimes, is heart-breaking.
The one thing that keeps my anger ignited and my drive to fight abuses, is seeing humans risk their own privileged liberties to try to unshackle those they'll never meet.
If we only care about the people in our own counselling room, in our own home, our own backyard, our own country... Well, then we are failing.
When we witness, as merely an unintervening bystander, oppression elsewhere that's funded by our own governments...then we are unfortunately inviting the same to ourselves.
This mindset reminds me of domestic abuse (my own and clients') and how friends and family can advert their eyes and fail to take action... for an easy life.
We know this is a mistake.
Let's stop making this mistake on a global level.
