🧠 Working with FND: Pathways & Innovations

Last week, our Clinical Psychologist Dr Louise Young and Assistant Psychologist Katie Gallacher attended the BPS Division of Neuropsychology Scotland’s annual CPD event in Edinburgh, focused on Functional Neurological Disorders (FND).

The event brought together leading NHS clinicians and researchers to share innovative approaches to FND care across hospital and community settings. It was a valuable opportunity to deepen our therapist understanding of current pathways and interventions, and to connect with others working in this complex area.

At Neurotherapy Services, we are committed to the ongoing development of our therapists expertise—ensuring our clients receive informed, compassionate, and evidence-based treatment.

We accept FND referrals via our website from individuals, Case Managers and Solicitors.

🧠 It’s National Checklist Day!

For someone recovering from a brain injury, checklists can be more than just a productivity tool — they can be an essential part of their rehabilitation.

✅ Why are checklists so powerful after brain injury?

Cognitive challenges like memory difficulties, reduced attention, and fatigue can make everyday tasks feel overwhelming. A well-structured checklist helps break tasks into manageable steps, reduces mental load, and builds confidence through small wins.

🧠Here are a few tips we often share with clients:

☑️Keep it short and realistic — focus on 3–5 key tasks.
☑️Use clear, simple language — avoid vague items like “sort things out.”
☑️Prioritise — mark the most important task with a star or colour.
☑️Include breaks — rest is part of recovery!
☑️Tick things off — it’s motivating and reinforces progress.

At Neurotherapy Services, we often support clients in developing compensation strategies like this as part of their rehabilitation journey. If you're a brain injury survivor or working with someone affected by brain injury, we’re here to help.

🌟Brain Injury Support Service Relaunch in Renfrewshire 🌟

Our Rehab Assistant, Shirley McFarlane, attended the launch of the Quarriers Brain Injury Support Service — and we couldn’t be more delighted to see this vital community service return in Renfrewshire.

It was an emotional event hearing from Liam, a client who has already benefited greatly from accessing the services support since it launched in June. Members of the long running peer support group 'The Sunshine Club' also shared how important the group is for them; helping to reduce isolation, empowering a sense of belonging, and feeling understood by others with lived experience.

The Lord Provost, Lorraine Cameron, also shared her personal experience with brain injury in her family and highlighted the positive impact it can make to receive help and support at the right time and to be able to access this support in your local community.

✨ International Meditation Day! ✨

Did you know that meditation can be a powerful tool in rehabilitation? At Neurotherapy Services, our team of psychologists and neuro rehabilitation specialists often incorporate meditation techniques to support recovery, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being for those recovering from neurological injuries.

Research shows that meditation can help improve cognitive function, reduce anxiety, and promote neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to reorganize itself after injury.

Incorporating mindfulness and meditation practices can be a vital part of a holistic approach to neurological rehabilitation. Take a moment today to breathe, relax, and embrace the mind-body connection!

"Rehabilitation for amputation patients is vital for a positive future, and the Rehabilitation Code 2015 (RC) makes rehabilitation a priority to give people access to:

Prosthetics
Physiotherapy
Psychological support
Aids and equipment
Home adaptations
Occupational therapy

These things are ‘basic needs’ for an amputation patient but sadly the provision of prosthetics can be a hotly contested battleground, with some insurers pushing for cheaper options."
