🤓 5 ways to help your dog adjust to winter walks 5 ways to help your dog adjust to winter walks 🤓.

The weather has definitely turned wintery here in Scotland this week. It can benefit our dogs to change how we walk them in winter. Here are some hints and tips.

➡ 1. Dress your dog appropriately: In colder weather, it's important to keep your dog warm and protected. Consider getting them a winter coat to provide an extra layer of insulation (some breeds need this more than others depending on thickness of their own furry coat). Additionally, paw wax can help protect their paws from ice, salt, and other harsh elements.

➡ 2. Adjust the length and intensity of walks: During winter, it's essential to be mindful of your dog's tolerance for cold weather. Shorten the duration of walks and adjust the intensity based on your dog's breed, age, and overall health. Some dogs may require more frequent breaks or shorter walks in colder temperatures.

➡. 3. Choose safe walking routes: Be cautious of icy or slippery surfaces that can pose a risk to your dog's safety. Opt for well-maintained paths or pavements, and avoid areas with excessive ice or snow buildup.

➡. 4. Stay visible: Winter days are shorter and darker, so it's crucial to make sure you and your dog are visible to others. Consider using reflective gear or attaching a reflective collar or leash to your dog.

➡. 5. Maintain proper hydration: Although it may be colder outside, your dog still needs access to fresh water. Dehydration can occur even in cold weather, so make sure your dog stays hydrated before, during, and after walks.

🤓Remember, it's always a good idea to consult with your veterinarian or animal physiotherapist for specific advice tailored to your dog's individual needs and health conditions.🤓

🥳 Looking ahead to 2026 with a poem dedicated to our animal friends…🥳

⭐Gather 'round, let's celebrate Hogmanay,
With horses, dogs, cats, and rabbits at play.
In the warmth of our home, we all unite,
A joyful gathering on this special night.⭐

⭐ The horses neigh with a spirited grace,
Their hooves dancing to the rhythm's embrace.
The dogs wag their tails, full of delight,
Bounding and playing, their spirits alight.⭐

⭐ cats purr softly, in their cosy nooks,
Observing the festivities with curious looks.
And the rabbits hop, with joy in their eyes,
Joining the merriment, a delightful surprise.⭐

⭐ Together we gather, a harmonious blend,
Sharing love and laughter, at this year's end.
Hogmanay brings us closer, side by side,
With our animal companions, our hearts open wide.⭐

⭐ As the clock strikes midnight, we raise a cheer,
For the bond we share, so precious and dear.
May the coming year bring joy and delight,
With our beloved animals, shining so bright.⭐
Anon.

🐕 3 ways to help your dog cope with the festive season 🐕

This can be a busy time of year for many of us which can be a confusing and stressful time for our pets. However, there are some simple and easy things we can do to help them ⬇

1) Give them a quiet place to retreat to when visitors come round if they wish. Some dogs will love to be in on all the action but others may find it all a bit much and prefer to chill out in peace and quiet. Making them a den or putting a bed or blankets down with some of their toys in a quieter part of the home will give them the choice of where they’d like to be.

2) Keep all Christmas food well out of reach. Many Christmas dinner favourites for us such as sage and onion stuffing, Christmas pudding (full of raisins and sultanas) and chocolate are extremely dangerous for dogs and will require immediate vet attention if ingested.

3) Try and keep certain parts of your dog’s routine as normal if at all possible. This is especially important for feeding times and walking times. If you are hosting family and friends, trying to ensure your dog has been out for some exercise before they arrive so they are ready for some rest time.
