Edinburgh Headway Group

Edinburgh Headway Group Supporting adults with acquired brain injuries and their families for over 30 years. http://www.edin SC006528

We provide high quality person-centred rehabilitation services which support both adults with brain injuries and their carers. We know that brain injury can affect personalities as well as a person’s cognitive and physical abilities. Brain injury affects who we are - the way we think, act and feel.A brain injury can have a life changing effect on the individual, their families and carers. Some people will need to deal with significant and on-going difficulties with their memory, concentration, communication, emotions, behaviour, change of personalities as well as physical disability. These individuals may also face barriers when trying to re-enter the workplace and the wider community. We believe that everyone has something to contribute within Edinburgh Headway Group and the wider community – that every person with a brain injury should be valued, respected and deserves every opportunity to live a full and active life. People living with neurological conditions may grieve changed abilities, missed milestones, friendships that slip, and a “before” life. Some live with anticipatory grief for a family member whose condition may progress. Others face bereavement and complex, ongoing waves of loss.

Don’t assume people are ok, change can be a kind of grief. Loss can take many forms and grief isn’t straightforward.

Many people affected by neurological conditions work hard to hide pain, fatigue, sensory overload, anxiety, or fear - especially in public. This is called “masking” and can hide significant need and delay in support.

Don’t assume people are ok just because they look or seem “ok”. Ask.

Not sure how? Download this toolkit from the Neurological Alliance of Scotland

Neurological conditions can co-occur with anxiety, depression, behavioural change, attentional challenges, sleep disturbances, and more. It can often be hard for people to voice their feelings.

Don’t assume children and young people are ok, they may be coping with more than you know.

This Brain Awareness Week we are raising awareness of the impact of neurological conditions on the mental health of children, young people, and their families. 🧠❤️

At least 1 in 6 people live with a neurological condition, including children and young people. Millions of people have loved ones who are affected by these complex and often life-changing conditions. The mental health impact of these conditions can often be hidden or misunderstood.

Do you work with young people? Check out this toolkit to find out how you can help: ➡️ https://bit.ly/4qCMCkL
