Maeve Sheridan - Animal Physio Plus

Maeve Sheridan - Animal Physio Plus ACPAT Chartered Physiotherapist specialising in horse and rider physiotherapy assessment and treatme Animals, like people, respond to physiotherapy.

Maeve Sheridan is an ACPAT Chartered Physiotherapist based in Edinburgh, providing horse and rider physiotherapy assessment and treatment in central Scotland. The purpose of physiotherapy is to restore and maintain mobility, function, independence and performance. Physiotherapy can help your horse by relieving pain, increasing mobility and promoting healing. Often horses only display subtle signs of pain or discomfort such as a change in behaviour, a change in performance, stiffness or a change in their normal movement pattern. Physiotherapy is extremely useful in assessing this and providing the correct treatment or referring to the vet if there is an underlying condition. In the sporting horse, physiotherapy can help to achieve and maintain optimal performance levels. As the horse and rider is a partnership, any stiffness or pain in the rider will have an affect on how the horse moves and vice versa. Maeve is an expert at assessing where the issue lies in the partnership and treating this to ensure the optimum performance from both horse and rider. Assessment of the horse includes a full assessment of conformation and posture, a full movement assessment and a full palpatory assessment. Problem areas are identified and a full treatment plan, including exercises, is made. Maeve has developed a full rider assessment and profiling service which she uses to identify any assymetry of movement, weakness or stiffness that may be affecting how you move on the horse. Physiotherapy treatments used by Maeve include:

Exercises – to improve strength, stability, flexibility and balance, both during the treatment sessions and an individually tailored exercise programme to be done at home. Manual therapy – may include soft tissue manipulation, joint mobilisation, massage and myofascial release techniques. Electrotherapy - may include electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and pulsed magnetic therapy. Advice – on how to manage and improve the condition and adaptations to the home environment to help your horse. Due to their university training Chartered Physiotherapists have a strong scientific background and work closely with the Veterinary profession to ensure the correct diagnosis and treatment of animals. ACPAT Chartered Physiotherapists only work with veterinary referral or consent and have professional and public liability insurance. Veterinary physiotherapy is covered by most insurance companies.

I was very privileged to know and work with this amazing horse.

The owners of a “glorified carthorse” who excelled at eventing, brought joy to three generations and was shortlisted for the Horse & Hound Awards have paid tributes to their horse of three lifetimes after his death aged 34. Carrie Mitchell’s supercob Half A Guinness (Pepsi) was “put to sleep...

Just a wee note to say I am off on holiday from tomorrow until Tuesday 22nd October so will reply to any messages then. I am fully booked for October and most of November, with a few spaces depending on the area.

I also wanted to share this message from the owner of Jay in the picture. I know I have a reputation for treating a lot of sports horses, but I do work with all horses. Jay is an older cob with the most lovely owner, they have been together for a long time.

When I started treating Jay last winter he wasn’t doing very well. He had his hocks medicated but was still struggling to move around comfortably in the field and his owner was very worried about him. All of his compensation patterns were making him struggle just in the field, and he hadn’t been ridden for months and months.

Within two treatment sessions, I received videos from his owner of him trotting, cantering and having a buck in the field 🥺😍

His owner is extremely dedicated and worked away over the winter at his exercise programme and then was able to get back on board from the spring.

She sent me this message a few weeks ago:

“Hi Maeve, just wanted to say thanks for Jay and I to enjoy this summer. The weather wasn’t the best, but we still managed some lovely rides and it was all because of you.”

Jay has had a total of six treatments since October last year and is booked in for a check up at the end of this month. His owner Sue has put in all the hard work and it has all paid off and I have been privileged to work with both of them. I really do have the best job in the world.

Enjoy the view 😎

Back from an amazing weekend at Defender Burghley Horse Trials cheering on and providing physio support for my long term client Wills Oakden Eventing and the lovely A Class Cooley. They jumped clear round a very, very tough track yesterday, and then clear again today in the showjumping to finish 17th 🤩😎

Now back to foggy Edinburgh in time for a busy week of work!
