☕ Estrogen, MCAS & Coffee in your Follicular Phase

During this phase we see our bodies follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulating the ovarian follicles to mature and produce estrogen. As estrogen rises: the uterine lining thickens, fertile cervical mucus increases, energy and mood often improve… what has that got to do with coffee??

•• Well we know that…
Estrogen and histamine share the same receptor (H1). When estrogen rises, mast cells release histamine. Histamine then signals the ovaries to make more estrogen… creating a cycle of estrogen → histamine → estrogen → histamine.

Not fun for estrogen dominant ladies… so can my coffee help or hinder me? I have been thinking about why and when I crave coffee… and interestingly the follicular phase might be a time to grab that coffee!

Here’s where coffee might help:
Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (NIH) found that caffeine can influence estrogen levels differently depending on race and the drink type:
• White women → coffee was linked to lower estrogen
• Asian women → coffee was linked to higher estrogen
• African American women → results were unclear
• Green tea & soda → raised estrogen in all groups

Why the difference?
Caffeine and estrogen share the same metabolic pathway — the CYP1A2 enzyme. Variations in this enzyme affect how you break down both caffeine and estrogen, which may explain why responses differ by race and individual genetics.

If you experience estrogen dominance, enjoying a cup of coffee in your follicular phase may be the prefect time!

🌺Fancy Saffron Rice for dinner? I have been craving a beautiful saffron rice curry 🍛 for mine… this brings my thoughts to the remedy Crocus (saffron is made from Crocus!) Also known as the autumn crocus flower, it was used historically for dysmenorrhoea (painful me**es) and irregular periods. Also as a natural antidepressant and nerve tonic in traditional Persian, Greek, and Ayurvedic medicine.
    •    Ancient texts describe saffron as a “heart’s cheerer” — calming melancholy, lifting spirits, and promoting emotional balance.
    •    Traditionally prescribed for anxiety, hysteria, nervous tension, and insomnia.

In Homeopathy, Yakir states an individual requiring Crocus as embodying the archetype of the Performer, a being of vivid emotional colour, who lives life as theatre — spontaneous, expressive, mercurial, and yearning to be seen. Beneath the laughter and the sparkle lies a tender soul, afraid of being forgotten or unloved.

They move between delight and despair, affection and anger, their moods as changeable as light on water. Their energy is contagious: they dance, sing, talk, and charm their way into hearts, but the same intensity can erupt into irritation, tears, or remorse when misunderstood.

Note Schloten puts Crocus in stage one and phase one - Impulsive, is the energy

🌺Changeable – Expressive – Theatrical – Mercurial – Artistic – Attention-seeking – Affectionate – Restless – Remorseful – Childlike – Charming – Volatile – Sensitive

Full Moon in Aries ♈️ — Tonight’s Full Moon in Aries embodies the archetype of the warrior ‘Samurai’ — fierce, passionate, and unafraid to carve new paths. Ruled by Mars, the god of war, this lunar energy burns with courage, drive… this brings my mind to Jan Scholten’s Stage 8 from the periodic table in homeopathy — Stage of perseverance, endurance, and the relentless push toward mastery.
Those in Stage 8 are builders of momentum — they brace themselves and carry on, even when the task feels like a mountain. The pressure is heavy, yet they thrive in it… think of the remedies arnica and ferrum!

Interesting to note our current world state with multiple wars destroying societies… Aries ♈️ is definitely in the Air 💨

Spotlight Remedy: Pomegranate (Punica Granatum)
Part of the Lythraceae family, the Pomegranate is an ancient symbol of fertility, beauty, and eternal life. In Greek and Persian mythology, it was sacred to goddesses such as Demeter, Persephone, Aphrodite, and Athena — embodying cycles of life, death, and rebirth.
In Christian art, the Virgin and the Pomegranate links the fruit to chastity, sacrifice, and resurrection — its red seeds seen as Christ’s blood, its abundance as unity and fertility. Also appear like ruby gemstones in the fruit…
Benefits and research has shown uses for the potent fruit… interesting to note it is said to be best eaten in your follicular phase!
• PCOS support: Improves insulin sensitivity, helps regulate reproductive hormones, and reduces chronic inflammation.
• Antioxidant & anti-inflammatory: Rich in compounds like ellagic acid, with anticancer potential.
• Breast health: Shown to influence hormonal receptors in hormone-sensitive breast cancer cells.
Symbolism in Tarot
Pomegranates appear behind the High Priestess, who embodies the sacred feminine, intuition, and the mysteries of the subconscious. The fruit here symbolises fertility, hidden knowledge, and the cycles of life and death. Like Persephone’s descent into the underworld, it represents crossing thresholds, initiation, and returning with deeper wisdom. Mirroring the homeopathic essence of Punica granatum: navigating the tension between purity and passion.
Homeopath Jan Schloten states…
Those needing Punica granatum often feel inherently special, longing to be recognised for beauty, refinement, and culture. They have a strong aesthetic sensitivity and recoil from rudeness, aggression, or violence — especially male violence.
Physical Affinities
• Female organs – womb, cycles, fertility.
• Dryness – affecting skin, mucosa, and digestion.
• Head – headaches < walking.
• Throat – spasms, constriction of the glottis.
• Heart – anxiety < slightest exertion.
• Stomach – worse from potatoes or fatty foods.
• Back – lumbar pain < sitting.
• Limbs – weakness < walking.

Spleen, Chinese Medicine, MCAS & Damp…connections…
In Western medicine, the spleen is seen as a central immune hub. T cells enter the spleen, interact with dendritic cells and antigens, and become activated to fight blood-borne pathogens. The spleen maintains natural killer T cells and supports memory T cell priming, ensuring long-term immune defence.
In TCM, the Spleen is considered the foundation of Qi and Blood production, transforming nutrients from food and drink into the energy that sustains life. It governs the body’s defensive Qi (Wei Qi), which protects against external pathogens. When Spleen Qi is weak, symptoms such as fatigue, poor digestion, dampness, bloating and lowered resistance appear. Mental overwork and worry are also said to weaken the Spleen, reflecting the way stress and exhaustion undermine immune resilience.

Now where does Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) connect in.. Mast cells, like T cells, are powerful immune regulators, releasing histamine and inflammatory mediators. In MCAS, this process is dysregulated, creating a chaotic immune response to otherwise harmless triggers. From a TCM perspective, this resembles Spleen Qi deficiency complicated by dampness and heat: the body’s defences lose their balance and the system overreacts.

When the Spleen is weakened, immune stability falters, creating ground for disorders to arise… such as MCAS. Do you notice MCAS flaring in the Damp? Did your MCAS start with Damp? Autumn is the perfect time to support your Spleen health 🩸

Lunar Eclipse and the Blood 🩸 🌕 Moon … is it all Fluid Consciousness? This brings my thoughts to a wonderful book by Homeopath, Rosina Sonnenschmidt, ‘Fluid Consciousness’ - she notes, “Blood has always been more than biology. It is memory, lineage, identity — the river of our humanity. Language itself shows how blood carries weight: out for blood, blood revenge, blood sacrifice, blue-blood, bloodline.”

In Chinese Medicine, blood 🩸 (Xue) nourishes the body and anchors the Shen (spirit). Strong blood roots the mind, gives calmness and focus, and keeps us connected to ourselves. Weak or stagnant blood leaves us restless, scattered, and disconnected. Trauma, ancestral suffering, and even collective history can disturb the blood, leaving imprints we now might call “cellular memory.”

This image is of Art installation by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota who captures it beautifully… as She describes blood as holding “everything inside of us: nationality, religion, family. This connects us, but sometimes it is also like a border.” Her vision mirrors Sonnenschmidt’s insights in the book…. Which is currently on my desk!

Again this brings it all back to MCAS, allergies, histamine, T- Cells and more… what is to be healed? What is this Full Blood Moon revealing to you today? Is their inheritance to be healed in your blood - line? To Restore your natural…flow from stagnation… is this Blood Full Moon unlocking the door 🚪 for you?

MCAS & Hormonal Health 🔥
Is Estrogen Dominance fuelling the fire?? 🔥

Excess estrogen (or estogen dominace) may not only be your ovaries producing too much, but it is likely to be our body is not be efficiently breaking down and excreting our excess estrogen, which in turn causes it to build up in our system... But how does this affect my MAST Cells?

Lets explain a little more detail... All cells have many different types of receptors that the chemical messengers, and hormones, like estrogen, will recognise and attach to. Histamine and estrogen attach to the same receptors (H1). Because of this, estrogen will cause a release of histamine from our mast cells present . The more estrogen you have, the more histamine that will be released into the bloodstream. More histamine results in more estrogen, which is where people will get stuck in a vicious cycle; one problem is feeding into the other…

MCAS, Homeopathy & the contraceptive pill … Have you been told your estrogen dominance fuelling the fire?https://www.kir...

Have you been told your estrogen dominance fuelling the fire?

Estrogen and histamine share the same receptor (H1) — which means high estrogen can trigger mast cells to release histamine. Histamine then signals the ovaries to make more estrogen… creating a vicious cycle of estrogen → histamine → estrogen → histamine.

No wonder so many women with MCAS notice flares around ovulation or before their period.

This is where Folliculinum, one of our homeopathic remedies can support balance. It helps regulate cycles, encourage progesterone’s calming effect on mast cells, and restore a woman’s natural rhythm — hormonally, emotionally, and creatively.

Folliculinum is about reclaiming balance — between estrogen & progesterone, self & others, giving & receiving.
