Artlink Edinburgh & the Lothians

Artlink Edinburgh & the Lothians We bring people together to explore possibilities, using art as a catalyst to spark new ideas.

Artlink believes participation in the arts has an important role to play in realising personal and social change. Our aim is to increase opportunities to take part in the arts for those who experience disadvantage or disability in the East of Scotland. We offer practical support so people can get involved, and also work with venues to increase opportunities to enjoy the arts. Artlink establishes partnerships with artists, venues and organisations to help transform lives.

Artlink are thrilled to announce that the National Lottery Young Start Programme has funded a 3 year long ‘Young Producers’ programme. Young people with neurodivergence will direct their own projects to bring like-minded others together for wellbeing. Dance, Animation and Drama groups have already begun and we’ll bring you updates across the projects as they develop.

We were delighted to share the first viewing of The Book of Belonging, a beautiful handmade book highlighting the work originating from the Glasshouses Creative Hub. Lovingly made by Gillian Stewart at Juju Books with giclee prints by Neill at Bridgeton Print, the book captures the spirit and beauty of the summer parades taking place within the community at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. Presenting the book were Karina and Fiona, sparking conversations about what form next year’s parade would take, and how best to promote the book within the local community. It really is a beautiful, interactive object which needs to be experienced first hand, so follow Friends of the Glasshouses - Artlink to stay informed.

With thanks to all involved in the project, not least Laura Lees and Anne Elliot.

Animate! with Emma Bowen - assisted by Cath Heay - was a fun and interactive workshop where the Makers got to flex their creative and storytelling muscles! Once all the animations were filmed, we had a showing of all the films, with popcorn of course.

Our amazing director, Jan-Bert van den Berg, is retiring after decades spent building Artlink into the wonderful, supportive and inclusive organisation that we are all so proud of. We were glad to be able to celebrate with him and so many friends of Artlink last week, there were tears!

Whilst we’ll be one member down on the biscuit-eating front, we’re delighted to announce that our new CEO is the brilliant Kara Christine, who has been with Artlink for over 20 years, and whose energy, commitment, humour and compassion have been behind numerous innovative projects.

Our Viva Boghall Archive Remix event was a celebration of music, culture and cuisine with the local community. It was great to come together to share amazing food, sounds and visuals.

With thanks to all involved, and Nina Brt in particular.

Summer Sessions 25, a celebration of art, creativity, culture, nature and community in the grounds of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital culminated in The Sea Trek Parade, a celebration of the Big Blue. What an amazing turn-out of folk, all dressed in costumes made by FFriends of the Glasshouses - Artlinkstaff and volunteers. It was so nice to see the whole hospital community get together, so thanks to everyone involved. All Hail the Whale!
