No child should face hospital alone. ❤️

Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity supports the life-changing work of the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People. Every single day, 500 seriously ill children and their families face a potentially life-changing hospital visit.

Kobi was born at just 29 weeks and has spent so much of his little life in hospital. ❤️

Thanks to your support, families like Kobi’s find comfort and reassurance when they need it most.

Kobi was born at just 29 weeks, weighing only 3.3lbs.

At first, everything seemed fine. Then, in the middle of the night, doctors rushed into the room. His tiny lung had collapsed and he’d had a severe brain bleed. His parents, Kirsty and Daniel, were told to prepare for the worst.

“Against all odds, Kobi pulled through. Eight agonising days later, we finally got our first cuddle with him. It felt like a miracle.”

Kobi’s challenges didn’t end there. He developed meningitis twice, needed blood transfusions, lumbar punctures and was having up to 10 seizures a day. Then, he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus - a dangerous build-up of fluid on the brain.

“The only option was brain surgery to install a shunt. Our boy has endured 16 surgeries. Sixteen times we’ve handed him over, not knowing if he’d come back.”

Facing hospital alone is terrifying. But thanks to your support, ECHC has been there for Kobi and his family.

“The support we’ve received from ECHC is what’s keeping our family together. The charity’s Hub has been a godsend - especially for Hope, Kobi’s big sister. It gives her space away from the beeping machines, the clinical smells, the constant worry. It allows her to be a kid again.

“The team has helped her to cope and helped us as parents too. Just having someone who listens, who really understands what you’re going through. It’s been a lifeline.”

“Without ECHC, we would have had to face all this alone. They’ve been here for us every step of the way. But we’re the lucky ones.”

No one should face hospital alone, especially at Christmas.

Please donate today to help children and families like Kobi’s. ❤

Introducing our brand new ECHC Christmas cards, as designed by our two brilliant card competition winners: Sienna, age 7, and Rowan, age 9! 🎅

Sienna attends weekly art classes and uses art to express her feelings. Her design, ‘Christmas Penguins’, was inspired by the warmth and togetherness she feels at Christmas.

Rowan loves to think outside the box, using lots of colour so his pictures stand out. His ‘Santa Rocket’ design takes Christmas to new heights! He says, “I hope people enjoy the Santa cards. I’ll be sending them to my family and friends.”

If you’re looking for Christmas cards that make a difference, look no further. Get yours today and help bring the magic of Christmas to children and families spending the festive season in hospital.

Sienna and Rowan’s designs are available in a pack together, alongside other festive favourites, from wreaths to Highland coos! Buy online or pick them up in our hospital shop.

Happy Halloween from everyone at the children’s hospital! 🧡🎃

Little ones have been enjoying spooky sensory fun in Helen’s ‘baby pumpkin’ sessions, complete with glowing lights, soft music, and mini pumpkin patches at the bedside.

We’re making sure no child misses out on the Halloween magic! ❤️

30/10/2025

Being in hospital doesn’t have to mean missing out on Halloween fun. In the lead up to Halloween, we’ve hosted a pumpkin patch. Children visiting hospital have decorated the spookiest pumpkins, with the chance to win a prize!

We’ve seen some fang-tastic designs, from skeletons and witches to Minions and Pac-Man all created with ghoulishly good fun.

A huge thank you to Conifox Adventure Park for supplying all the gourd-geous pumpkins for little hands to decorate, and to all the children and families who joined in with their monstrous creations! 🍂🧡

Olivia was only four when everything changed.

She’d been diagnosed with cerebral palsy around her first birthday, but she was thriving - walking, running, and joining in at the school sports day.

Then one morning, out of the blue, she woke up being sick and with a sore head.

Mum Rebecca says, “I sat her on the couch, but she kept toppling over. Her arm was floppy, then her face began to droop. I knew something was badly wrong and rushed her to hospital. By the time we got there, her speech was slurred. I was panicking.”

A CT scan confirmed it: Olivia had suffered a stroke, likely caused by the chickenpox virus.

“The hospital staff were incredible. They moved so quickly. For the next six weeks, we lived on the Borthwick ward. It’s so scary that something so ordinary could cause something so serious.

“In hospital, you don’t have time to process. You’re in survival mode. One thing that really helped was visiting Susie, ECHC’s Complementary Therapist. I wasn’t looking after myself at all, so that hour to relax made such a difference.

“Olivia also loved The ECHC Hub. It brought her joy when everything else felt so frightening.

“Coming home has been another big adjustment. Olivia is aware her body doesn’t work the way it used to, and that’s hard for her.

“But through it all, I am so grateful. Everyone who supported us made such a difference. I can’t imagine what our journey would have been like without them.” ❤

Let’s get ready to crumble! 🍰

Today was the day of the much-anticipated Bake It Happen, our hospital baking competition that always causes a real stir.

Our very special guest judge, The Great British Bake Off winner Peter Sawkins (Peter Bakes), was back to cast his expert eye over some spectacular sweets. This time with the help of superstar young patient Fraser. 👨‍🍳🌟

Peter had quite the challenge, with so many hospital staff rising to the challenge, and not a soggy bottom in sight.

And the Star Baker is… Tricia Neilson, who made a tremendous teddy bear cake with a signature ECHC red tee. 🧸 Ironically, Tricia was at the dentist (!) so our Shop team collected the winning plate on her behalf.

A massive thank you to wonderful Peter for joining us, Fraser for the top tasting support, and to all our brilliant bakers - young patients, hospital staff and Team ECHC - who donned their aprons and really helped to Baked It Happen.

If we could, we'd give you all a Hollywood handshake. ❤️🤝

“The ECHC team made Belle feel seen.”

Ten-year-old Belle had been unwell for a week when her parents took her to A&E. She was diagnosed with two types of cellulitis and Invasive Group A Strep behind her eye.

It was a frightening time, but thanks to your support, ECHC was there for the family.

Mum Lucie remembers: “We didn’t know exactly what was going on, just that it was serious. Every day, doctors talked about surgery, so Belle had to fast repeatedly. It was very stressful and exhausting.

“About two days in, a nurse mentioned ECHC’s Hub. We went along and it made a huge difference. It was a space away from the hospital setting, where Belle could just play and relax.

“The Hub gave our days structure and something to look forward to. The ward was intense, bright, and non-stop. The Hub, by contrast, was quiet and calm. They always brought something thoughtful. It felt personal, like they understood who she was beyond the illness. They also made sure her little brother Sebastian was included too. He loved coming in on Fridays to play the Nintendo Switch. “

Once she was feeling better, Belle and Sebastian wanted to give something back. With their friends, they raised nearly £2,000 through bake sales and selling 3D-printed toys at their village fair. An incredible thank you to the ECHC team who supported them. ❤️

“Hospital can be scary and full of unknowns. So when you find something positive, you hold on tight. The Hub brought light into a really dark time. It helped Belle - and it helped our family. If we ever have to go back, knowing The Hub is there makes all the difference.”
