Do you work in a team? Or offer a service?

Understanding how someone’s trauma can affect how they show up in the world can be a game-changer for any organisation.

Staf have launched their free course on the Open University website, called Trauma-Informed Relationship-Based Practice.

Our Easy Read team have created an Easy Read version of the course!

To find it, visit https://www.open.edu/openlearncreate/course/view.php?id=12321

Choose ‘course content’ and scroll down to find ‘Easy Read’.

Everyone is welcome to use it!

Easy Read has short sentences, simple words and clear pictures. It’s useful for anyone who might:

-have learning disabilities

-find long texts hard to read or overwhelming

-be neurodivergent

- be learning English as an extra language

-have cognitive disabilities, like dementia

Our third post for the United Nations International Day of Disabled People celebrates the local power of Access Panels across Scotland!

Access Panels are volunteers who use their lived experience to tackle barriers created by society. They work with local councils, organisations, and communities to make buildings, transport, services, and local spaces more accessible.

Across Scotland, Access Panels achieve both small and big wins every day. This includes improving transport and housing to campaigning for Braille labelling on food products and delivering accessibility training.

They remove the barriers that society creates. This helps disabled people take part fully and equally in everyday life. This supports this year’s theme of making society fairer and more inclusive for everyone.

Our second post for International Day of Disabled People celebrates our Easy Read translation and training services!

Easy Read is a way of sharing information so that it is simple and accessible for everyone. It uses plain language, short sentences, and pictures to make information easier to understand. This matches this year’s theme of building communities where everyone can take part and be included.

This year, our Easy Read Team has been producing clear, high-quality documents. At the same time, our Training Team has been helping individuals and organisations gain the skills to make their own Easy Read materials.

We are thankful to our Easy Read User Feedback Group. They check our documents and give ideas to make them better.

We also lead the UK Easy Read Standards Working Group. This brings together organisations, experts, and people with lived experience to make sure Easy Read is done well and in the same way across the UK.

Plus, we are proud to be part of the International Easy Read Community of Practice. We have contributed to a free Easy Read Resource Pack to help individuals and organisations make information more accessible. As a bonus, the pack includes a limited-time offer for our Easy Read training and translation services!

Today is the United Nations International Day of Disabled People!

This year’s theme is about creating communities where disabled people can fully take part and society becomes fairer.

Thank you to our members, Access Panels, followers and all our partners! Your engagement and experiences are at the heart of all we do. This helps to ensure that disabled people’s voices are heard in local, regional, and national discussions.

To mark the day, we will be sharing a series of posts to celebrate the projects we are involved in.

Our first post focuses on our work with Transport Scotland to gather experiences to make travel more accessible for everyone.

Do you have a Blue Badge?

Or do you know or support someone who has a Blue Badge?

Our Easy Read team has created a Blue Badge Rules document in Easy Read for Transport Scotland.

It is an easy-to-understand guide to the places you can and cannot park with a Blue Badge. It also tells you what to do if you lose your Blue Badge and when to give it back.

Easy Read always has short sentences, simple words and clear pictures. It’s ideal for anyone who might:
-be learning English as an extra language
-have learning disabilities
-be neurodivergent
-have cognitive disabilities, like dementia
-find long texts hard to read or overwhelming

For more information about having Easy Read made, please email easyread@disabilityequality.scot

We have put the link to the Easy Read Blue Badge rules in the comments below. Everyone is welcome to use it!
