What's the right amount of tension?

We all exist in states of tension that are constantly shifting and changing every second, from the engagement of the muscles when we walk, to the intensity of our thinking and the interaction between the mind and body.

We absolutely need to have some tension in our systems to get things done. Take walking as an example. If there was no tension in action, we would flop around like jellyfish. When we have the right amount, everything feels easy and smooth.

When we have more than enough, on the other hand, it can cause pain both physically and mentally. Our systems start to close down to help us not feel the stress. This enables us to function, and, at the same time, it dulls the good with the bad. The increased intensity of trying to get ready for the festive season can cause us to miss the small moments of joy.

We at Living health really want everyone to enjoy the positives that the Festive season brings. The appreciation of close relationships, the sentiment of good old movies and stories shared with our loved ones, the warmth of the fire and cosy blankets. All those positive heart felt experiences that boost us during the cold, dark and dreich days.

To really relax and let go of excess tension, let's bring our attention to those things that influence it. Let's take deep breaths. Let's stop and scan our body and acknowledge what's present. Let's move and go for a walk. Let's leave the things on our to-do list that can wait for later. Let's do something nice for ourselves and treat our body and mind with compassion.

Taking a few minutes at a time to stop, pick one of the the above and appreciate something within us or around us will go a long way.

👉OUR MIND IS MULTIPLE
Did you that there is no such thing as a singular human mind? And that our mind is actually multiple?

What it means that our natural internal make-up resembles very much to an internal family. Our parts that might hold various beliefs and energies about life, based on our life experience, as well a those of past generations and society at large. In their original state, these parts hold wisdom and gifts.

Sometimes, parts speak to us through physical pain or tension. By alerting us to pay attention, they might hold a story that need to be heard, witness and healed.

👉🤗WE ALL HAVE ACCESS TO COMPASSIONATE CURIOSITY
We also have access to a state within us that is naturally open hearted and curious. This is our innate healing source. It' is US, the compassionate witness, the unconditionally loving parent to our internal family or parts. From this state we can transform past trauma, physical pain and less useful behaviours or beliefs.

It reminds us that, deep down, we are all whole, and we are not broken. That there is hope, and that we all can access more of it.

👉🤓HOW CAN YOU START APPLYING THIS UNDERSTANDING RIGHT NOW?
When you feel tension or pain in your body, or when you become aware of a place in your body holding an emotion (e.g. anger, sadness, anxiety, etc...), ask yourself this:

⭐What if I approached this tension/pain/emotion from that compassionate, curious space?
⭐What if I could acknowledge it as it is right now, without trying to push it away?
⭐What if I could imagine it as a younger part of me, a little one inside? How would I feel towards it?
⭐What if I could ask it what it needs from me right now? And what if I could listen with my senses to its response, and give it to them? How would it respond after it receives it from me?

👉☀️Now, go ahead and turn these 'what if' questions into gentle, curious action. And notice the magic and intelligence of your system unfold. Let us know what you discovered.

How we look at situations and events can really affect our mood and, in turn, how our body feels.

Something happens during those times when we rush around, feel overwhelmed or stressed, with a generous number of 'absolutely must do' things on our To-Do list. Our body responds. It can do that by shutting down digestion, nutrition absorption, affecting sleep quality and hormone release processes. Our muscles on the neck, shoulders and jaw tighten. Our nervous system goes into fight and flight mode.

And in turn, our energy impacts our perspective.
If we feel good, solutions appear with more ease, we find our way forward with more calmness and life no longer feels so overwhelming.

So what if there was a simple way to start this process of shifting perspective into a more resourceful state of being?

OUR TIP: Paced breathing

Let's create a little bit of space. One way to start making this space for ourselves and calm the nervous system is by becoming aware and changing our breath.

This simple, yet effective breathing technique can reduce stress levels, improve overall health, and help slowdown your heartbeat. Here's how to do it:

Inhale for a count of 2-4 and exhale for a count of 4-6. Find the combination that feels good to you, just make sure you exhale longer than you inhale. You can focus your attention gently on your lungs as they expand and contract. After a few breaths, notice your body softening.

You can try breathing both in and out through your nose and also breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. Pick what feels more calming to you.

How did it feel for you to try this? Leave us a comment.

Here at Living Health, we thought it was about time we shared more about what we do and why we do it. We are passionate about helping our clients to understand how the mind and body relationship affects their health, through the various treatments we offer.

Over the coming weeks, we will share more about what inspires us - so you can get to know us a little more. We will also be sharing practical tips, which we hope will help many of you to navigate this time of year.

We all want to have fun, spend time with family and have a joyful festive season. This is the time to give. Yet if we give too much, we run the risk of depleting our batteries. If our energy levels are low, then we can get overwhelmed by all the things that have to get done.

This quote reminds us of the importance of saying 'No.', before the body says it for us.

So make sure you look after yourself so you can enjoy the upcoming weeks. Rest, recharge and remember - it is ok to say 'no'. 🙂

We invite you to watch this talk (around 40mins) by one of our role models, Dr Gabor Mate, who has strongly affected the Living Health philosophy. It will inspire you to think about how our emotions affect our physical health, and the fact that the mind and body are never to be separated.

Stress is ubiquitous these days — it plays a role in the workplace, in the home, and virtually everywhere that people interact. It can take a heavy toll unle...
