What's the right amount of tension?
We all exist in states of tension that are constantly shifting and changing every second, from the engagement of the muscles when we walk, to the intensity of our thinking and the interaction between the mind and body.
We absolutely need to have some tension in our systems to get things done. Take walking as an example. If there was no tension in action, we would flop around like jellyfish. When we have the right amount, everything feels easy and smooth.
When we have more than enough, on the other hand, it can cause pain both physically and mentally. Our systems start to close down to help us not feel the stress. This enables us to function, and, at the same time, it dulls the good with the bad. The increased intensity of trying to get ready for the festive season can cause us to miss the small moments of joy.
We at Living health really want everyone to enjoy the positives that the Festive season brings. The appreciation of close relationships, the sentiment of good old movies and stories shared with our loved ones, the warmth of the fire and cosy blankets. All those positive heart felt experiences that boost us during the cold, dark and dreich days.
To really relax and let go of excess tension, let's bring our attention to those things that influence it. Let's take deep breaths. Let's stop and scan our body and acknowledge what's present. Let's move and go for a walk. Let's leave the things on our to-do list that can wait for later. Let's do something nice for ourselves and treat our body and mind with compassion.
Taking a few minutes at a time to stop, pick one of the the above and appreciate something within us or around us will go a long way.
