On Sunday I went for a run. The sun was finally shining, but my legs felt heavy from the start. I usually acknowledge fellow runners, but this time I decided to make a real effort.

Running along the cycle path, I looked everyone in the eye. I must have passed around 50 runners and walkers. Most kept staring straight ahead. A few who met my eye looked confused or gave a slightly forced smile…

But three people beamed back at me — and it completely lifted my spirits. Suddenly my legs felt lighter, and so did the run.

It was such a simple reminder of how powerful a small connection can be.
