Our clinics
Over the past few years we have developed several dedicated service which not all patients may be aware of. These include:

• Vision Therapy Clinic, improving visual efficiency and strengthening the connection between the eyes and brain

We are obsessed with these Cutler and Gross sunglasses Hamish got from us, and he is rocking them all the way in Australia! Hamish works at luxury menswear company Christian Kimber in Melbourne, so needed a pair of sunnies to match his look. I mean look at that suit! Stylish from head to toe.

Prevention: what would you tell your younger self?
Looking back, what advice would you give your younger self about eye care? Many conditions that affect vision later in life develop slowly. Good habits from childhood and early adulthood can make a meaningful difference decades later.

These habits are worth encouraging as early as possible.

1. Protect your eyes from the sun.
Ultraviolet exposure accumulates over time. Consistent use of high quality sunglasses with full UV protection, even on cloudy days, reduces the long term risk of cataract and other sun-related eye damage.

2. Do not skip routine eye examinations.
Many eye conditions develop quietly, without pain or obvious symptoms. Regular examinations allow early detection, often before vision is affected.

3. Take regular breaks from close work.
Modern life involves sustained reading and screen use. Encourage the 20 20 20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

4. Support general health.
Eyes are part of the body. A diet rich in leafy greens, colourful vegetables and omega 3 fats supports retinal health. Regular exercise, good blood pressure control and avoiding smoking significantly reduce the risk of sight threatening disease later in life.

5. It is never too late. Whatever stage your eyes are at, these principles still apply. Small, consistent habits over years really do matter.

We’re proud to support the work of Dyslexia Scotland with a recent donation from our charity fund, after the charity was nominated by one of our young patients.

Through our Visual Stress Clinic, we regularly see individuals, particularly children, who find reading uncomfortable or tiring. For some, this can sit alongside dyslexia, and it’s something we take time to assess carefully and support where we can.

Dyslexia Scotland does incredible work raising awareness, offering support, and helping individuals build confidence in education and beyond. We’re very pleased to contribute, in a small way, to that impact.

If you or your child struggles with reading, words moving on the page, or visual discomfort, our team is always happy to help guide you.

You will find a wealth of valuable information on the charity's website dyslexiascotland.org.uk/parent/

Sparkling in Nina Mûr eyewear ✨

Our latest addition to our Frame Room family is Spanish brand Nina Mûr. We introduced them last year and they specialise in sustainable, wooden frames in unique colours and patterns. We love their commitment to slow fashion and artistry, they have become a firm favourite here in the Frame Room.

Model Elia was chosen by Clotilde in this unique hammered gold. The frame is crafted from Finnish Birch wood, with a hammered gold effect layer on top to add a gorgeous shimmer to the frame. This cat eye shape combined with the gold makes a beautifully elegant pair of frames, don’t they just look fabulous!

If you are new to the practice, over the coming weeks we will be introducing each of our optometrists so you can get to know the team behind your care.

First up, meet Ian Cameron, our Managing Director and one of the UK’s leading specialist optometrists.
📚BSc(Hons) MCOptom DipCLP DipTP(IP) FBCLA

With more than 20 years of clinical experience, Ian is widely respected for his expertise in glaucoma and complex eye disease. He regularly sees patients with challenging or uncommon conditions referred from across Scotland and beyond.
Ian holds Independent Prescribing status, meaning he can assess, diagnose and medically manage eye conditions without unnecessary hospital referral where appropriate. He is also a Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association, one of the youngest optometrists to achieve this distinction.

Since Ian joined the family practice, Cameron Optometry has become one of the most clinically advanced independent practices in the UK, winning multiple national awards and building a team delivering hospital level care in a community setting.

Ian is particularly committed to inclusive, patient-centred care and has a strong understanding of neurodiversity and the additional challenges faced by some children and families when accessing healthcare. This informs both his clinical approach and the culture he has fostered within the practice.

Outside practice, he enjoys endurance events, music and family life with his wife and three children. He also has a very enviable eyewear collection!

Can’t decide? Have one pair as sunglasses!

Sandra recently fell in love with two frames - model Apple from theo eyewear and model Relief from Anne et Valentin - and we agreed one would look fabulous as sunglasses!

Model Apple is a finer frame - round with a wink in the corners to add more interest and Sandra went for colour ‘bluesy red’, easy to wear every day yet interesting enough to catch your eye! Model Relief is round, with a flat top and bevelled edges. Especially in this stunning mottled blue/grey they make a perfect pair of sunnies!

Two fabulous frames, two different looks and purposes! We can put sunglass lenses in any of our optical frames too so don’t be limited in your choice of prescription sunglasses.

Flashes and floaters, when should you worry?
Noticed tiny specks drifting across your vision? Or brief flashes of light out of the corner of your eye?

Floaters can look like small dots, cobwebs or squiggly lines that move as your eyes move. Flashes often appear like quick flickers or lightning streaks, especially in darker rooms.

In many cases, floaters are common and can be a normal part of ageing. However, a sudden increase in floaters, new flashes, or a shadow or curtain in your vision can be a sign that the retina needs urgent attention.

Phone us if you have any concerns and we can advise whether you need an urgent eye assessments to check the health of the retina and rule out anything serious. Using advanced imaging and thorough examination, we can quickly determine whether everything is stable or if you need onward referral.
If you experience:
• A sudden shower of new floaters
• Flashes of light that persist
• A dark shadow or curtain in your vision
• Sudden change in vision
Please contact us immediately. It is always better to have it checked.

Your eyesight is too important to ignore symptoms that feel new or different.

💜International Women’s Day
Today we are celebrating all the incredible women who make our practice what it is.

With 25 women in the practice (alongside Ian, who is well and truly outnumbered), our team is powered by expertise, compassion, precision, and teamwork. From clinical care and specialist contact lenses to dispensing, leadership, and behind-the-scenes support, women are at the heart of everything we do.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme, Give to Gain, feels especially fitting. By sharing knowledge, supporting one another, and investing in our patients and our team, we all grow stronger. Better collaboration leads to better care, and that benefits everyone who walks through our doors.

We are proud to work in a profession where women lead, innovate, and lift each other up every day, and where patient care is stronger because of it.

Happy International Women’s Day.

Sophie’s new frames ✨

Model ‘Eat’ from theo eyewear is from their latest family, flow. Each model in this family is crafted from high quality titanium and the name represents how they ‘flow’ along with you and your lifestyle. Described as ‘ever present, without demanding attention’ these frames are understated fun from our creative Belgian friends.

Sophie’s frame is a gorgeous unisex aviator, retro-inspired and definitely so in this colour combination of burnt shadow brown and olive green. Paired with brand new on the market photochromic lenses - inside they have an orange gradient tint and outside they chance to a dark grey - these are truly magic.

Why visual fields testing matters
Your eyesight is more than just how clearly you can see. Some conditions, like glaucoma, can cause changes in your peripheral vision long before you notice any symptoms yourself.

That’s where visual fields technology comes in.

Using advanced equipment, we can map your field of vision and pick up the earliest signs of conditions such as glaucoma, optic nerve damage, or neurological issues. The test is simple, painless, and gives us vital information about your eye health.

It’s just one of the many ways our technology goes beyond a standard eye test to protect your sight for life.
