A May 2025 study in JAMA Network Open found that supervised yoga was as effective as supervised strength training for reducing pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
The trial focused on 117 Australian participants aged 40 years or older with knee OA and moderate pain.
Over a three-month period, both yoga and strength training reduced knee pain, but yoga also offered slightly greater benefits for symptoms of depression.
After six months, participants who continued a home-based yoga routine had better adherence and reported less pain and stiffness than those in the strength-training group.
