Did You Know?

Fizzy drinks and chewing gum can affect your scan.

They may seem harmless, but both can introduce excess air into your digestive system, making it harder for ultrasound waves to travel through and get a clear image of your organs.

That’s why we recommend avoiding fizzy drinks, chewing gum, and even smoking before certain scans, especially abdominal or upper abdominal scans.

Following your pre-scan prep (like fasting or filling your bladder) gives your sonographer the best chance of capturing accurate results.

What is an Endometrial Thickness Pelvic Scan?

An endometrial thickness scan is a pelvic ultrasound that measures and assesses the lining of the womb (the endometrium). The thickness and appearance of this lining can change throughout your cycle and at different stages of life, so understanding what’s normal for you is important.

This scan can help to:
• Investigate irregular, heavy or prolonged periods
• Assess post-menopausal bleeding
• Monitor the womb lining before or during fertility treatment, including IVF
• Check the endometrium in women taking HRT
• Provide reassurance if you’ve been experiencing pelvic symptoms

For post-menopausal women, measuring the endometrial thickness can help identify whether further medical assessment is needed. However, any post-menopausal bleeding should always be discussed with your GP in the first instance.

If you’re unsure whether this scan is appropriate for your symptoms or stage of life, we’re happy to talk it through and guide you.

Did you know?

Around 7,600 people are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the UK each year. (Cancer Research UK)

One of the challenges with ovarian cancer is that many women wait before seeking advice, often because symptoms feel mild, vague, or easy to explain away.

Bloating. Discomfort. Feeling “not quite right.” These are common experiences. But when they are persistent and unusual for you, they are worth checking.

Early assessment doesn’t mean assuming the worst. In most cases, symptoms are caused by something benign. But ruling things out can provide reassurance, and if further investigation is needed, it can help move things forward sooner.

If you’re concerned about ongoing pelvic symptoms, your GP should always be your first point of contact.

If you would prefer not to wait or would like additional reassurance, Moray Ultrasound offers private pelvic scans without the need for a GP referral. Ultrasound cannot diagnose ovarian cancer, but it can assess the pelvic organs and identify findings that may require further review. A detailed report is always sent to your GP to support your ongoing care.

March is Endometriosis Action Month 💛

Endometriosis affects around 1 in 10 women, yet many wait years for answers.

Severe period pain, pain during s*x, chronic pelvic pain or fertility difficulties are often normalised, but ongoing pain that interferes with daily life isn’t something you should simply “put up with.”

Ultrasound cannot diagnose endometriosis on its own, and a confirmed diagnosis requires specialist assessment. However, pelvic ultrasound can help identify features such as ovarian endometriomas (“chocolate cysts”) or other abnormalities that may support further investigation.

If symptoms are persistent or impacting your quality of life, speaking to your GP is the first step.

If you would prefer not to wait or would like further assessment, Moray Ultrasound offers private pelvic scans without the need for a GP referral. A detailed report is always sent to your GP to support ongoing care.

Pelvic pain is often described as “normal”, especially around periods.

But there’s an important difference between something being common and something being healthy.

Pain that:
❎ stops you going to work
❎ wakes you at night
❎ requires regular strong pain relief
❎ causes pain during s*x
❎ or is worsening over time

isn’t something you should simply accept.

Conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts or fibroids can contribute to ongoing symptoms. In some cases, persistent bloating or pelvic discomfort can also require further investigation.

Ultrasound cannot diagnose endometriosis on its own and cannot diagnose ovarian cancer. However, it can assess the ovaries and surrounding pelvic organs, identify cysts or other structural abnormalities, and help guide appropriate next steps.

If pelvic pain is persistent, your GP should always be your first point of contact.

If you would prefer not to wait for imaging or would like additional reassurance, Moray Ultrasound offers private pelvic scans without the need for a GP referral. A detailed report is always sent to your GP to support ongoing care.

March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month 💙

Ovarian cancer symptoms can often be vague and easy to dismiss. What matters most is persistence - symptoms that are new for you, unusual, and happening regularly over several weeks.

If you’re experiencing ongoing symptoms, your first step should always be to speak to your GP.

At Moray Ultrasound, we provide private pelvic ultrasound scans without the need for a GP referral. This can be helpful if you don’t want to wait for an NHS appointment or would like additional reassurance.

While ultrasound cannot diagnose ovarian cancer, it can assess the ovaries and surrounding pelvic structures and identify findings that may require further investigation.

A detailed report is always sent to your GP so your care can continue appropriately.

If you’re concerned about persistent symptoms and would like a scan for reassurance, we’re here to help.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound scans are often associated with sports injuries, but they’re used for a much wider range of joint, muscle and soft tissue concerns.

An MSK scan can help assess muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints in real time, including how they move and respond under gentle pressure. This makes it particularly useful for investigating ongoing pain, restricted movement or injuries that haven’t fully settled.

At Moray Ultrasound, MSK scans are carried out by specialist sonographers with experience across a wide range of conditions. While we don’t diagnose, we provide detailed reports that can support physiotherapy, GP or consultant-led care.

If you’ve been dealing with pain or injury and would like clearer information, an MSK ultrasound scan may help provide answers.

Bleeding changes can be unsettling, especially when they don’t fit your usual pattern.

An endometrial thickness scan is a type of pelvic ultrasound that looks at the lining of the womb (the endometrium). It’s commonly used when someone is experiencing irregular bleeding, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after the menopause, helping to build a clearer picture of what’s happening.

This scan is also used as part of monitoring during fertility treatment or hormone therapy, including HRT. By measuring the thickness of the endometrium, it provides useful information that can support conversations with your GP or healthcare provider.

While we don’t diagnose, we provide a detailed ultrasound report that can be shared if further assessment is needed.

For many people, it’s simply about understanding their body a little better and having clear information to work with.
