Moray Maternity Services

Moray Maternity Services This page will provide all official updates regarding the ongoing challenges facing the Paediatrics Service at Dr Gray’s Hospital.

Following a number of recruitment issues, we recently made the difficult decision to temporarily withdraw inpatient services at Ward 2 until we are able to ensure we have a safe and sustainable level of staffing available. This change is only for inpatient paediatric admissions. All paediatric outpatient clinics and other services are unaffected by the change. We would encourage anyone who wants to be kept up to date with the latest information to follow this page. Please also share this page with anyone you think may have interest. Proudly working together to deliver the best possible services for a healthier Grampian. NHS services for the half-million people who live in Grampian are provided by NHS Grampian, and are overseen by one single NHS Board. The single Grampian NHS Board is responsible for improving the health of the Grampian population, and for delivering the health care required. The Board must oversee the taking-forward of Scotland's national health agenda, tailored to the needs of the Grampian population of half-a-million people spread over 3,000 square miles of city, town, village and rural communities. The Board is supported from headquarters at Summerfield House in Aberdeen. Senior managers for the functions which cover the whole of Grampian are based here, including financial overview, corporate planning, and central responsibility for protection and promotion of public health. NHS Grampian consists of acute services, corporate services and three Integrated Joint Boards and works closely with the local authorities. NHS Grampian is also very closely linked with both the University of Aberdeen and The Robert Gordon University, especially in the fields of research, workforce planning and training. Moderation

Moray maternity care assistants take to the national stage

Two Moray maternity care assistants are set to take their progress in supporting parent education to the national stage, at The Royal College of Midwives SMiLe Conference in Edinburgh in November.

Sue Petrie from Elgin and Kelly Croudace from Burghead have taken a leading role in running the Parental Early Educators Programme (PEEP) locally for new mums and dads – a five week journey which begins antenatally to encourage parents to develop strong attachment with their baby.

Kelly explained: “Creating a supportive network helps to reduce anxiety and low mood for new parents. We discuss the development of baby and how developing firm bonds between parent and child creates a loving and nurturing environment as the child grows. Classes can also help parents be aware of the more challenging aspects of parenthood and how to deal with them.”

The Scottish Government has provided funding for PEEP classes and hopes to see these made available for all families across Scotland. Kelly and Sue will provide a leading example of how these classes can be delivered, to inspire other maternity teams across the country.

Sue said: “Many women don’t have family close by, especially if they are in the Forces and we have two bases nearby. These classes encourage friendships that are hopefully long lasting, and this has a direct impact on mental health. We’re also able to provide soon-to-be parents with practical, hands-on teaching on how to care for their baby once they have arrived. We also support midwives with postnatal visits and feel very privileged to get to make real connections and follow the journey of new parents.”

Kelly, who jumped at the chance to work with the Women’s Health Clinic after going as far as she could as a healthcare support worker in general practice, says she is passionate about her role within the community midwifery team. She added: “Our connections with families grow as we are able to follow women through their pregnancy journey and look after them in the early days of parenthood. It’s a pleasure to be a part of their lives at such a cherished time.”

Jacqueline Keddie, midwifery lead for Moray, commented: “We’re very proud of our Kelly and Sue, and our trainee maternity care assistant Brittany who looks after Speyside and Banff. They are a huge asset to our team and their efforts to inspire other teams across the country with their parental education programmes is fantastic.”

Vaccines continue to be the most effective way to protect people from serious, life-threatening diseases.

Thanks to vaccines, diseases like smallpox, polio, and tetanus, that were once responsible for millions of deaths and disabilities, have been eliminated or drastically reduced.

Following some concerns raised regarding waiting times for gynaecology patients from Moray, we're keen to provide an update on work ongoing to address this.

Firstly, we acknowledge that waiting times are not where we would like them to be across Grampian. We know people are waiting for too long and we apologise to anyone whose quality of life has been impacted by this. We're working on it, and we are seeing some encouraging improvements.

The appointment of two new obstetrics and gynaecology consultants at Dr Gray's last year means we have additional capacity to run clinics, and patients are offered appointments where they can be seen soonest so sometimes Moray patients will be seen in Aberdeen. In the last 18 months we have seen the number of people waiting longer than 4 weeks for an urgent outpatient appointment reduce from 181 to 32 and those waiting for longer than 4 weeks for a routine appointment reduce by almost one third. Similarly, the number of people waiting longer than four weeks for an urgent inpatient procedure has reduced by half and those waiting for longer than 4 weeks for a routine inpatient procedure has reduced from 93 to 38.

There is more work to be done and we will continue to work on this. The number of referrals for urgent suspected cancer has increased by around 50% in the last five years across Grampian, across all specialties. While the number of confirmed cases remains relatively stable, this means there’s huge demand for diagnostic radiology services and our teams are using the latest innovations, tools and expertise to ensure patients are treated as quickly as possible.

If you are currently on a waiting list and you are concerned your condition is worsening, please get back in touch with your GP so you can be re-assessed. We will continue to offer updates as we make progress with this work.
