Many people believe anxious thoughts create anxiety.
In reality the sequence is often the opposite.
The body first enters a physiological state of anxiety. The brain then tries to explain the unfamiliar sensations.
Because the brain dislikes unexplained body signals, it often creates fearful narratives such as:
“What if something is wrong?”
“What if something bad happens?”
“What if I can’t cope?”
These stories are not the cause of the anxiety. They are the brain’s attempt to explain sensations that have already begun in the body.
Understanding this shift can change the way anxiety is interpreted.
