* * * Metals * * *
I wanted to do a post on the metals that I use.
I only work with copper, and silver plated copper wire.
Copper is well known for tarnishing (as are most metals), and for this reason, I purposely use “tarnish resistant” wire.
Even in this instance, there is still a chance of tarnishing.
To prevent tarnishing, ensure you keep your jewellery dry. Also keep it away from direct sunlight (ie. Don’t keep it on a windowsill).
In the event of tarnishing, you can try cleaning it.
To clean tarnished copper jewellery, use natural household items such as a paste of lemon juice and baking soda, or a salt and vinegar soak/paste.
Or you can opt for mild dish soap for regular upkeep
Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth to restore shine.
For light to moderate tarnishing:
✨ Lemon & Baking Soda Paste: Mix equal parts lemon juice and baking soda into a paste, apply with a soft cloth or soft toothbrush, gently scrub in circular motions, then rinse and dry well.
✨ Vinegar & Salt Soak/Paste: Dissolve salt in white vinegar (e.g., 1.5 tsp salt in 1 cup vinegar) and soak jewelry for a few minutes, or make a paste with flour, salt, and vinegar for tougher spots, then rinse and dry.
✨ Mild Soap: For regular cleaning, use warm water and mild dish soap to remove dirt without harshness, then rinse and dry.
Polishing and Protecting:
✨ Buffing: After cleaning, use a soft, clean cloth (like microfiber) to buff the copper until it shines.
✨ Prevention: Keep copper jewelry dry, as moisture and air cause tarnish; a light wax or sealant can also offer a barrier.
✨ Rinse & Dry: Always rinse thoroughly with water (sometimes with dish soap) and dry completely to prevent water spots and further reaction.
✨ Gentle Scrubbing: Use a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush to avoid scratching the metal.
✨ Handle with Care: Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive pads that can damage the copper or crystal
I hope this helps
