OXYTOCIN ❤️

Oxytocin is a hormone, sometimes known as the happy or love hormone 😍

It’s a powerful hormone produced in the hypothalamus (part of the brain) and released into the bloodstream by the posterior pituitary gland (also in the brain).

Oxytocin has a key role in labour. It helps labour to progress and keep contractions (surges/waves) going!

This incredible hormone stimulates the uterus to contract. With each surge, more oxytocin is released encouraging more surges.

However it’s important to keep your oxytocin flowing during labour. Here are a few simple ways:

✨Intimacy with a loved one - cuddles, kissing, ni**le stimulation and s*x (in the early stages of course!)
✨Lots of laughter - watch a funny movie
✨Have your favourite food or drink
✨Listen to relaxing and/or uplifting music.
✨Look at photos of a memorable happy time!

Remember, everyone is different so do what makes you feel happy, loved, comfortable and safe. It’s very personal to you!

If you would like to learn more about the hormones of labour and birth, I cover this topic in more detail in my Mindful Birth course. DM or contact me via my website [link in bio] to find out more.

“…. lending a supportive ear when we needed reassurance that we weren’t just going crazy…”

The early stages of parenting can be overwhelming and sometimes you just need someone to ask questions, run your thoughts by or just to listen!

Having that someone is invaluable and being that someone is truly rewarding 🥰

Thank you for another lovely review ⭐

I was lucky to support an amazing family during their home birth and last week I got to have lots of cuddles with their baby during a postnatal visit 💗

As a birth doula, following the birth of your baby, I will arrange a postnatal visit with you and your family to see how you all are, give you space to talk through your birth experience (if you like) and answer any questions you may have…. and of course celebrate the new addition to your family ☺️

If you’re thinking about having a home birth (or birthing in a hospital or birth centre) and would like to learn more about my doula services and how I can support you, message me or visit https://www.jadehill.co.uk/birth-doula

Loneliness after having a baby…

A study by the British Red Cross found that 90% of new mums felt lonely since giving birth. Stats shared by

Looking after a baby 24/7 can be all consuming and you might feel like you need more than the day-to-day routine of parenting.

It’s common for parents to feel like they cannot not say they are feeling lonely or isolated or like they have lost their identity because this may be negatively viewed by the outside world BUT it’s totally ok for you to feel like this and it’s important that you talk about it.

Here are a few tips for any mums and dads out there who may be feeling like this...

🤍 Reach out in your local community. Sign up to mum and baby groups - it’a never too late to make new friends

🤍 Make plans to leave the house - maybe schedule some coffee dates throughout the week or just take a walk for some fresh air

🤍 Take time out for yourself - try to maintain or take up a hobby that doesn’t include baby

🤍 Find additional postnatal support. There are more in-person and virtual resources out there since the pandemic.

✨ As a doula, I offer 1:1 postnatal support sessions in-person or via Zoom. I can be there as a companion as well as an extra pair of hands! 🤗

✨ If you take a Mindful Birth course with me, you will have access to monthly postnatal preparation sessions, via Zoom & also access to a private Facebook group where you can get further support and meet other parents ☺️

Reaching your ‘due date’…

For some, the pressure and frustration starts to build once you have reached 40 weeks of pregnancy and even more so when your due date has passed.

Especially, when you get daily questions like…

- “Any sign yet?”
- “You’re quiet, just checking if you’re in labour?”
- “How many days late are you now?”

🙄 Usually from loved ones - they mean well but it can be very annoying!

TIP: Tell people a due date that is a couple of weeks later to give you that much needed space in your mind.

Did you know?… Only 5% of babies are born on their due date so putting too much emphasis on a due date isn’t helpful.

Your baby will be born when your baby is ready! 🧡

So, use the time leading up to your baby being born to listen to your body. Rest, read, watch loads of TV, do some light exercise and enjoy those last precious moments with your bump 🥰
