Stress relief is definitely one of the most common reasons that new students give for trying yoga.
Sometimes their doctor has recommended it; perhaps they are looking for a type of exercise that is mindful or holistic as well as physical.
Or perhaps they are trying to find a practice that will also offer that feeling of ‘me time’ – something more enjoyable than simply pounding away on the treadmill.
As yoga teachers we definitely believe yoga practice is good for stress, but the key is in the word ‘practice’ – one class may or may not help, but establishing a regular practice definitely will. Some of the tools you might find through yoga practice are things you can take off the mat into your daily life – things like centring exercises or the ability to ground yourself when something difficult happens.
You may learn a bit about the nervous system and how it can be regulated and calmed by breathing exercises.
Relaxation exercises such as progressive muscle relaxation can help us ‘tune in’ to our bodies and discover where we feel tension in the body that we might have been simply unaware of before. And of course, asana practice (the physical movements) give us a good stretch, strengthen our muscles, increase our heart rates and often, just feel really good!
Our yoga space in Epping is open and inclusive with classes for all bodies and all levels of experience.
