One question that I get asked quite a lot…
Why does my nose get stuffy during a massage?
1. Relaxation Response
• When your body shifts into “rest and digest” mode (the parasympathetic nervous system), fluids like saliva and mucus can increase. A runny nose is just part of your body relaxing and resetting.
2. Increased Circulation
• Massage improves blood and lymph flow. This can stimulate mucus membranes in your nose, making them produce more fluid.
3. Face-Down Position
• Lying face-down, especially with your head in a cradle, can cause sinus pressure to shift. This often leads to a runny nose or mild congestion.
4. Essential Oils or Scents
• If your therapist uses aromatherapy oils, they can sometimes loosen nasal passages (similar to inhaling menthol or eucalyptus).
5. Allergy or Sensitivity
• In rare cases, it could be mild sensitivity to massage lotions, oils, or even the laundry detergent on sheets.

✅ Good news: It’s harmless and usually just your body responding to relaxation and positioning.
💡 Tip: If it bothers you, let your therapist know—they’ll usually have tissues on hand and can adjust the face cradle or use unscented oils.
