Top Tip Tuesday ๐Ÿ˜โ€ฆ Babies learn about communication by observing how the people around them respond to their sounds and body language. And they are motivated to keep trying by any positive reactions! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฅฐ

๐Ÿ’™ Your baby is likely to have been understanding your signing for a while, but their own first attempts at signs might not look exactly the same as the signs you use. For example, a baby might sign more by tapping one hand on the back of the other, or on their arm, or even just by clapping! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

๐Ÿ’› The accuracy of their hand shape isnโ€™t what matters most - itโ€™s the effort to communicate that we want to celebrate and encourage! ๐ŸŽ‰

If you think your baby has used a sign in context, get excited! Praise them by saying the word and showing the correct sign again ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿป Be consistent with your signs - their accuracy will come naturally, just like it does with spoken words later on!

๐Ÿ’™ Donโ€™t worry if your baby uses one sign for several words right now - thatโ€™s actually quite common. Theyโ€™ve discovered that signing works to get their message across and so their next step is refining their signs and expanding their vocabulary ๐Ÿฅฐ

Remember to:
๐ŸŒŸ Praise any attempts at signing
๐ŸŒŸ Accept any version of the sign
๐ŸŒŸ Consistently model your version so they can refine theirs
โ€ฆand enjoy those magical moments when your baby communicates something new with you ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฅณ

Top Tip Tuesday! ๐Ÿ˜„ Here at Sing and Sign our aim is to support and encourage your babyโ€™s early communication and speech development. ๐Ÿ˜Š

We encourage you to use simple signs which highlight key words in your spoken sentences, helping your little one connect words with objects, people, and activities in their world.

โœจ So when you are signing with your baby or toddler it is essential that you say the word (or make the sound, like an animal noise or vehicle sound) when you use a sign - never sign in silence!

You will also find that when you sign you naturally slow down your speech around those important words (even if you donโ€™t notice it). This draws your babyโ€™s attention to the word and helps further to emphasise its meaning. ๐Ÿ˜

In Stage 2, it's colours week! This week its all about colours and we'll be singing our gorgeous rainbow song ๐ŸŒˆ
Signs for colours can be an excellent memory aid for all the new words your little ones are using!

Colours are great to start introducing to toddlers, however they are actually a very complex thing for them to grasp. So donโ€™t worry at all if your little one doesnโ€™t learn to distinguish them for a good number of years yet.
However, did you know that you can greatly help them understand the concept of colours if, when you remember, you name the object first and then mention its colour. And itโ€™s even better for their understanding if you can add in the word โ€˜colourโ€™ too - this helps them work out that your adjective is a colour rather than a property of the object such as shiny or fast.
And splitting the colour away from the object as you speak makes it easier to sign too. As you know at Sing and Sign we advise you to stick to only one sign per sentence. So in the example here you could sign both car and red when you split what youโ€™re saying into two sentences.
Xx

Top Tip ๐Ÿ˜Šโ€ฆ Trust the process!

It takes time for a baby to recognise and understand gestures and signs - just as it does with spoken language. Consistency is key! Make signing a part of your daily routine so it becomes a habit and a natural part of your communication together.

Think about waving. ๐Ÿค— Itโ€™s one of the very first gestures babies learn and thatโ€™s no accident. They see it often, itโ€™s motivating, and it always gets a lovely response. ๐Ÿฅฐ

The same science applies to other meaningful gestures and signs. Choose the ones that matter to your baby - milk, more, finished, bath, music - and use them regularly, in the same context, with the same warm tone. Over time, your babyโ€™s understanding grows, and those magical first signs begin to appear.

Trust the process. Keep showing, keep modelling, keep enjoying it together. ๐Ÿฅฐ
