In January we welcomed the brilliant The Baked Bean Charity Choir to Princess Alice Hospice to join us for our study day on 'Learning from the Experiences of People with Learning Disabilities and Neurodivergence - Choices and Care at End of Life'.

They included us all, by singing and signing, in a joyful performance which captured the essence of the day!

A huge thank you to our amazing speakers; Dr. Andrea Bruun (Research Fellow, Faculty of Health, Science, Social Care and Education), Carol Blues (RNLD Community Nurse), and to Lisa Rothery, Jacob's parent, from whom we learned so much.

It was an inclusive, collaborative day and we want to do it all again next year!

👟 Many of our marathon participants run in memory of a loved one, like our London Marathon runner Emma.

"I am running the London Marathon 2026 for Princess Alice Hospice because I want to remember my mum, who was a keen marathon runner, and give back to Princess Alice, who provided essential care through her illness.

The London Marathon has particularly special memories for us, from my mum bringing me to take part in the Mini London Marathon as a kid, to watching Paula Radcliffe set a new world record at in 2003, to cheering my mum on to her personal best in 2012. My goal for the marathon is to get as close as possible to the time she ran in 2012; 3:33:35.

I miss her so much, but running in her footsteps will be so special and I know she’ll be with me every step of the way."

Thank you so much Emma, for choosing to support Princess Alice Hospice. ❤️

Eleanor’s husband, Michael, was diagnosed with liver cancer in September 2017, and was initially referred to Princess Alice Hospice as a day patient.

Eleanor said, ‘Unfortunately, by mid-December 2017 we could not continue looking after Michael at home and he had to be re-admitted to Princess Alice Hospice. I remember it was quite late in the evening when he got there but Michael seemed to relax as soon as he arrived. He knew the Hospice was a safe place and it helped that Michael had been there previously and he knew what he was going to.

My daughter and I were able to stay with him in his room and sleep there for the next four days until he passed away.

The care Michael received during that time was so wonderful. The nurses did not see Michael as a patient. They really cared about him as a person.

After Michael died, one of the nurses placed a lovely posy of flowers by his head. It was so beautiful.

The care we received from the Hospice did not end once Michael died. I attended 6 counselling sessions at the Hospice and this encouraged me to become a grief companion. I trained as a Compassionate Neighbour which I have been doing for the last 3 years.’

A heartfelt thank you to Paul and the ‘Sing Out’ adult choir! 💗

We recently had the absolute pleasure of meeting Paul, one of our highest Santa Fun Run fundraisers, to present him with a special hamper as a small token of our sincere thanks — but as Paul was quick to say, this was truly a team effort.

Together with the wonderful ‘Sing Out’ adult choir, Paul helped raise an incredible £2,530 in memory of Jacquie Kirke, a deeply meaningful tribute. Thanks to generous match funding from a local business, which matched the first six fundraisers to reach £1,000, their total was boosted to an amazing £3,530!

To Paul and every member of the ‘Sing Out’ choir — thank you for your passion, teamwork and dedication. Your collective support is making such a difference to the patients and families we care for. 💚

Trevor’s wife, Kathleen, passed away in 2018 after an eight-year journey with cancer.

Following Kathleen’s death, Trevor moved into a residential development where he was asked if he would run a monthly general knowledge quiz for fellow residents in the Residents’ Lounge.

For the past 18 months, Trevor and his daughter have been organising these quizzes, generously donating all proceeds to Princess Alice Hospice.

In gratitude for the care Kathleen received at home, Trevor has also chosen to remember the Hospice in his Will.💛

Trevor says: ‘As the care Kathleen received from the Hospice at home was so excellent, I have decided to leave a gift to the Hospice in my Will.

This was very easy to do. I had to redo my will after Kathleen died and told the solicitor what I wanted. We were both so grateful for the support we received from the Hospice that this was a very easy decision for me to make.’

With no children of their own, Raymond and Maureen had made mirror Wills earlier on in life, meaning that Raymond’s estate was left to Maureen when he died.💛

Having experienced the quality of care provided to them both, Maureen decided almost straightaway to update her Will; she has chosen to leave her estate to Princess Alice Hospice, as a legacy of thanks: ‘It was a long time ago, but I know it will be spent in the best way possible.’

To this day, Maureen remains grateful for the ‘wonderful’ care provided to her late husband and herself by Princess Alice Hospice and says, ‘I don’t know what I would’ve done without them.’
