Do you have Achilles pain that is -

aggravated by low loading activities such as heel raising and cycling?

Doesn’t “warm up” with activity?

Doesn’t hurt at higher loads with activities such as jumping or hopping or at the end of range of movement?

It could be be paratenonitis! This needs different treatment to a tendinopathy!

The paratenon is a thin elastic sheath that wraps around the tendon itself. It can get inflamed most commonly from friction, such as rubbing against a bony prominence like your heel bone (calcaneus).

Paratenonitis can also be found in really chronic cases of Achilles tendinopathy.

How long does it take for pain to go away?

Sometimes people with persistent pain think about the time it will take for the pain to decrease or change.

Although sometimes pain may not fully go away, most clients wonder how long it will take to see significant improvements.

A good way to think about this is by comparing the process of learning a sport-specific skill.

Just like with any sport-specific skills, the longer we practice that skill and perform it, the longer it takes to unlearn it. Like a habit.

Our pain works in a similar way, so that the longer we “output” pain with a specific movement, the more time we must spend unlearning the message that the movement is painful, in order to see significant improvements.

does this analogy make sense? comment below and let me know what you think 🤔

TURmeric and health benefits-

Turmeric is a staple in South Indian cooking, which I have grown up with.

Over the years, it has become popularised in western culture as a health fad, claiming many benefits and becoming hugely overpriced.

The active substance in turmeric is circumin - this is said to have anti-inflammatory effects, lessen joint pain and arthritis, improve gut problems, eye health, immunity - the list is endless.

Whilst there is some research behind this - it is also said that the recommended dose is 1-2g per day ( a LOT!) and it tends to bind to fats in the gut, making it not too easily absorbed. It needs to be bound to something else that makes it more bio-available 🤔

So think carefully about spending so much money on supplements and just eat a balanced diet! 🥗

We often think that, because our pain is not improving, we are not getting better....

But - DOING MORE without an increase in pain is a significant improvement!

Graded exposure to activity and exercise is really important following any injury, and is actually a key part in healing and recovery.

Over time, the pain will start to settle once the brain and nerves can desensitise and unlearn the painful response to activity.

Did you know that mindfulness and relaxation can improve your pain?

This is well documented in scientific research 🤔

Even just sitting for 5 minutes and practicing deep breathing exercises can stimulate your vagus nerve, which is linked to your parasympathetic (restore and repair) nervous system and your heart, lungs and digestive tract.

This can help turn down the sensitivity of your nerves and help to calm your nervous system, reduce stress hormones and help you sleep, improve your mood and oxygen levels. All that from just breathing...

Why does inactivity make our pain worse? 🤔

It is simply a nerve adaptation against threat or perceived threat - because your body becomes unused to movement after rest, your nerves perceive even normal movement to be dangerous or a threat.

You should always try to keep as mobile as possible following an injury, as to do so will help your recovery be as speedy as possible!

Strength training is super important to maintain the strength and stability to carry out every day tasks without getting injured.

It is a great preventative measure for back pain!

It is great to prevent things like diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis and more!

There is even evidence to suggest that the vertebrae of weight lifters become wider and more dense in time!

Aim for 150 mins a week of moderate intensity exercise, to include strength, mobility and cardio.

MYTH BUSTED 🙅🏽‍♀️

Did you know - disc herniations (or “slips”) are a normal ageing change on MRI scans, and don’t always cause pain?

McCullough et al (2011) and Jarvik et al (2001) published research that stated that normal ageing changes on MRI findings such as a herniated (“slipped”) disc, or loss of disc height were present in 91% of individuals WHO DO NOT HAVE BACK PAIN.

We only need to scan if it is clinically indicated.

Instead, we should educate ourselves about how robust our spines are, restore normal movement and break down barriers to movement/fear of it, get stronger and get back to doing what we love, pain free.

Physiotherapy is a key ingredient for this! 💪🏾 and yoga can be too!
