Exciting News: Our Surgery Extension Is About to Begin
We’re delighted to let you know that Pinhoe Surgery has received full approval and funding to begin our long-awaited building extension. Work is due to start on 5 January 2026, and we’re very pleased to be moving forward.
A local company, Fifields, will be carrying out the construction. They will have a temporary site office in our car park, which will unfortunately reduce parking by five spaces during the project. The work is expected to finish by 28 August 2026.
What’s changing?
• A brand-new extension to create more space for patient care and to house our growing administrative team
• Replacement of all skylights to improve light and heat efficiency
• A full refurbishment of the current nursing suite, transforming it into purpose-built clinical rooms
The project will take place in phases. First, the new extension will be built. Once that’s ready, we’ll connect it to the existing surgery so we can begin using the new rooms while the older areas are being updated.
Throughout the works, we’ll do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum. We’ll keep you updated via our waiting rooms, website, page, and foyer notices. To help maintain privacy, frosted window film will be added to all ground-floor clinic areas during construction.
This extension has been many years in the making, and we’re thrilled to be improving the surgery for the benefit of our patients and the future of general practice. Thank you for your patience and understanding while the work is under way.

Announcement: Dr Malcolm Bird’s Retirement as Partner

We would like to inform our patients that Dr Malcolm Bird will be retiring from his role as a Partner at the practice on 31st July 2025, after an incredible 27 years of dedicated service.

Dr Bird has been a valued and respected member of the team, caring for generations of families with compassion and professionalism. While he will be stepping down from his formal responsibilities as a Partner and will no longer hold a regular patient list, we are pleased to let you know that he will continue to support the practice in an ad hoc capacity during school holidays until Spring 2026, helping us manage demand during busy periods.

We know many of you will want to join us in thanking Dr Bird for his years of commitment and wishing him all the best in this new chapter. We have therefore purchased a message book which will be on the counter at Pinhoe Surgery for patients to write in. You can also drop messages into Broadclyst Surgery and we will ensure that they are placed into the message book. His presence will be greatly missed, but we are grateful for the continued support he will offer in the months ahead.

Dr Bird's current patients will be transferred across to Dr Constance Fearnley on 1st August. Dr Fearnley works Monday afternoons, Wednesday and Friday all day.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

BIKE THEFT UPDATE 10.30-10.36am today
Police crime ref 50250162918
We have reviewed the CCTV and have pulled VERY clear images of the culprit who is a 15-16 year old male with brown hair. Wearing a black NIKE zip up jacket with big NIKE wording on the back and a large shiny black puffer jacket which he then puts in his black rucksack. He is wearing black NIKE trousers, white socks and black shoes. If you have any information please share directly with the police and if you know the culprit, please encourage them to return the bike. Depending on the outcome, we may consider releasing the CCTV footage, but given the culprits age, we want to give them the opportunity to do the right thing first.

You may have seen on the news about the Mounjaro weight loss drugs now being prescribed by GPs. This is not yet the case in Devon. Devon ICB (our commissioners) are still working on the service specifications and finer details and we are not permitted to prescribe at this time. What we know so far is that, when any service does go live, the initial criteria (cohort 1) is very strict and to be eligible, patients have to meet the following:

A BMI of 40 or higher, or 37.5 or higher if from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean ethnic backgrounds.

AND

At least 4 of the following comorbidities:

Hypertension and on treatment for blood pressure
Dyslipidaemia (high cholesterol) or on cholesterol treatment "statins"
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
Cardiovascular disease
Type 2 diabetes

At our practice, this represents an incredibly small number of patients. When we know more, we will be in touch with these patients. In the meantime, please do not contact the surgery regarding this as all of the information that is currently known can be found here: https://www.pbmp.uk/news/mounjaro-tirzepatide-injections and here: https://myhealth-devon.nhs.uk/my-condition/condition/weight-management/

If you would like to discuss other ways that we can support you with your weight please make an appointment to see our Practice Dietitian.

Maintaining a healthy weight is important for your overall health and wellbeing. It can help to lower the risk of developing illnesses and conditions such as heart attacks, dementia and stroke and it can increase confidence and happiness, improving overall quality of life.
