End of day 1 Selfie at the World Extreme Medicine | B Corp Certified conference 2025!

What an extraordinary group of people we have in this room. Astronaut-physicians… midwives who also happen to be helicopter pilots…a consultant oncologist who is also a champion triathlete and ultra-runner...and colleagues here who are literally saving lives in Gaza and Ukraine.

This is not normal. But then, this is not your average medical conference!

We are all here as part of a remarkable community - one that exists to lift each other up, to expand what we believe is possible, and to show each other the many different routes that true purpose can take.

Mitch Hutchcraft delivered some powerful words today in this evening’s closing keynote: ‘’Every one of us has our own Everest. It doesn’t matter how big or small it looks from the outside’’ (Coming from a man who just swam the channel, cycled to Nepal then summitted Everest!)

It’s about taking the time to identify what sparks your curiosity - what is it that truly aligns with YOUR unique talents, YOUR passions, YOUR sense of purpose.

Because once you find that, and you start taking those steps, one foot in front of the other, one pedal stroke after another, and before long, you’ll look back and realise that you’ve created something incredible of your own 💪

I’m looking forward to another two days of this special energy. Thank you to all today’s speakers that made today so special including Professor Mark Hannaford DSc (hc) Mike Barratt Luca Alfatti, FRRHH, FEWM, FRGS. MSc. Nightfall. Three downed paragliders in a forest deep in the Slovenian mountains.
And a team of medics racing to save them. What happens?

Mud. Madness. Magic. And a lot of learning!

On the Expedition & Wilderness Medicine Course, we spend four days building skills in lectures and small groups, but the most powerful learning happens when it all comes together in the field. That’s why the course culminates in a secret search-and-rescue scenario that can unfold at any moment, day or night.

It’s raw, unpredictable, and designed to test every ounce of what the team has learned: map and compass navigation, crew resource management, trauma primary survey, radio comms, casualty packaging and evacuation, involving a gruelling carry over rough, slippery ground.

The exercise is followed by a compassionate, structured debrief led by our experienced faculty. This is a safe space to unpack and reflect on events and is where the deepest learning is consolidated.

Every time, I’m humbled by how much of themselves the delegates give, and how powerfully these experiences reshape their perspective and build their confidence to handle anything, anywhere at any time.

I made this short video to capture just a glimpse of the energy, challenge, and spirit.

An ode to the humble Hydrocolloid dressing (Compeed) 👣

For general-purpose blister care on expeditions and endurance events, it’s hard to beat.

Sure, it’s not perfect. There are situations where other options win out (K-tape for prevention, moleskin for hot spots, or fabric bandages and Leukoplast for deroofed blisters). But as an all-rounder, hydrocolloid is a true workhorse.

It creates a cushioned, protective layer that relieves pain, reduces friction, and a nice moist environment that helps the skin heal faster. A godsend when you still have miles to cover.

It shines on intact blisters, but be cautious using it on open or infected wounds. In those cases, a breathable, non-stick dressing is your friend.

Still, when you’re in the field and need something that just works, I can’t think of a more versatile, one-size-fits-most option.

What do you think, are you a lover or a hater?

My heartfelt appreciation for the porters and local crew supporting this jungle-based project, many of whom are not eating or drinking during the daylight hours of Ramadan. I’m pretty sure if I tried this I would keel over. They remain rock solid 💪 like the true masters of this environment. Without their contribution, projects and adventures like these just wouldn’t be possible 👊. I salute you 🫡 .compass

NB Medical presenter team 2024.

We breathe raw medical research and guidelines to life in a way that genuinely transforms the care of patients across the UK and beyond.

This is a special group of extremely skilled people, who are driven by purpose and passion for what they do. I feel lucky to be part of it.

- a small animal vet, researcher and endurance athlete - was the first woman in history to complete the Barkley Marathon in March this year - arguably the worlds most gruelling footrace.

Many people believed it wasn’t even possible for a woman to complete this course, but she unequivocally silenced the doubters.

Her success was built on the failure of three previous attempts. Jasmin Paris you just kept coming back, and in last nights closing keynote at the 2024 World Extreme Medicine conference, you showed us that when you believe in your dreams, push on through those bad patches and look after your support team, you really can achieve the impossible!

Over the last 3 days of the conference we have laughed with (Adam Gent ), cried with (documentary film maker), been utterly amazed by (astronaut physician), felt gratitude with Jan Becker (midwife/pilot/humanitarian), fear with Ben Lyon (Royal Marines IED Trauma sims) serenity with - Adventure Psychologist, fascination from (cold operations specialist), exhilaration through@drniallmccann (extreme adventurer), and everything in between.

On behalf of .hannaford_adventurer (hc), Amy Green, Nick Struthers-Frost Katie Harwood ACIM A IDM and the whole team at WEM I want to extend our heart felt thank you to ALL of this years speakers.

You have inspired and uplifted a global community of extreme medics to follow the path less travelled, reach into parts of the world few dare to tread, and relentlessly push those boundaries!

A patient collapses in the doorway and has a seizure. Another comes to the front desk with central crushing chest pain. Then a concerned mother asks you to look at her drowsy newborn with a non-blanching rash….

With overstretched ED’s and ambulance services we are seeing a lot more urgent and emergency presentations at GP surgeries.

What makes these ‘Waiting Room’ Emergencies so challenging?

Well, we’re not really geared up for them….

🤷‍♂️ We’re using the emergency kitbag from the cupboard that few in the practice are familiar with.
🧐 There is massive skill fade of acute skills, which are rarely deployed in day to day general practice
🤨 There’s generally a lack of dedicated processes and systems to treat these patients, we’re caught off-guard.
🤯 A ‘flash team’ of forms around the patient, who have not worked together in this context before.
😳 The whole time you’re dealing with the situation, the routine work continues to build up, only adding to the pressure….

I put together a training session for the skilled and dedicated staff at Ide Lane Surgery. We worked through some of these HALO (High Acuity, Low Occurrence) presentations, reviewing up to date practical guidance followed by hands-on rehearsal through low-fidelity, in-situ simulation in the practice waiting room using the live emergency kit bag. It was great to see everyone get stuck in, particularly the vital role provided by non-clinical staff (practice receptionists and secretaries).

If this is the kind of training your practice team would benefit from, please ping me a message
