Natural Doping Using Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
In 2006, the World Anti-Doping Agency's ethics committee ruled that hyperbaric chambers enhance physical performance! There were questions about whether hyperbaric oxygen therapy should be classified as a doping method. Ultimately, the executive committee refrained from adding hyperbaric therapy to the list of prohibited substances and doping methods. Today, HBOT therapy has earned the title of natural doping!
This raises the question: why did hyperbaric oxygen therapy spark such controversy and attract the attention of the World Anti-Doping Agency? Anyone who trains knows that with intense effort, proper oxygenation of the body is essential. As physical performance increases, the cellular demand for oxygen—which serves as fuel for our muscles and body—also rises! Micro-injuries to muscles, ligaments, and joint capsules during training are a natural process of building strength; however, this necessitates appropriate breaks in training for recovery. Without this, our body's capabilities are significantly limited.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has a beneficial impact on athletes, both professional and recreational. During the treatment in a specialized hyperbaric chamber, body cells become saturated with oxygen, which penetrates all physiological barriers, thus reaching areas that normally wouldn’t be accessible. This has the following effects on our body:
- Reduces recovery time after injuries and significantly decreases the risk of their occurrence
- Decreases swelling after injuries
- Increases ATP levels, which serves as fuel for the muscular system
- Eliminates the problem of muscle “acidification”
- Reduces recovery time by 70%
- Increases performance by up to 10%
- Decreases the degree of body dehydration
- Accelerates metabolism
- Stimulates the immune system
- Reduces inflammation
It is no wonder that HBOT therapy has caught the attention of the World Anti-Doping Agency. It is also certain that this method of "doping" will never be banned, as it would be difficult to outlaw oxygen.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is increasingly recognized by a growing number of athletes and their doctors. Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, and Cristiano Ronaldo openly admit to utilizing HBOT therapy. The hyperbaric chamber also provided medical support during the Sochi Olympics.
