Understanding the Most Common Knee Injuries🏃🏽
Your knees are vital for daily movement, supporting your weight and absorbing impact with every step. Unfortunately, they are also prone to injuries. Let's break down the most common knee injuries and how physiotherapy can help.
1. ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) Tear
Cause: Sudden stops, changes in direction, or landing awkwardly from a jump.
Symptoms: A popping sound at the moment of injury, swelling, instability, and pain.
Physiotherapy Focus: Strengthening surrounding muscles, improving balance, and restoring joint stability.
2. Meniscus Tear
Cause: Twisting the knee while bearing weight or sudden pivots.
Symptoms: Pain, swelling, stiffness, and a catching or locking sensation.
Physiotherapy Focus: Reducing swelling, improving range of motion, and strengthening muscles around the knee.
3. Patello-femoral Pain Syndrome (Runner's Knee)
Cause: Overuse, muscle imbalances, or improper tracking of the kneecap.
Symptoms: Dull, aching pain around or behind the kneecap, especially during activity.
Physiotherapy Focus: Correcting muscle imbalances, improving knee alignment, and modifying activity levels.
4. MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament) Injury
Cause: Direct impact to the outer side of the knee, causing the inner ligament to stretch or tear.
Symptoms: Pain along the inner knee, swelling, and instability.
Physiotherapy Focus: Restoring flexibility, strengthening the knee, and gradually returning to activity.
5. Tendonitis (Jumper's Knee)
Cause: Overuse, especially from repetitive jumping or running.
Symptoms: Pain and tenderness below the kneecap, swelling, and stiffness.
Physiotherapy Focus: Reducing inflammation, strengthening the quadriceps, and correcting movement patterns.
Physiotherapy is essential for knee injury recovery. Treatment may include:
Targeted exercises to strengthen and stabilise the knee.
Manual therapy to reduce pain and improve mobility.
Guidance on proper movement and injury prevention.
