Control feels calming. Tolerance builds confidence.

Reducing checking by 5% does more for anxiety than perfect preparation ever will.

Burnout isn’t just about being tired. It’s what happens when pressure goes on for too long without enough support.

Rest matters, but burnout also needs reduced demand, clearer boundaries, and care.

Many coping strategies work in the short term. They lower anxiety, reduce discomfort, or help us get through the day.

Avoidance is one of them.

Stepping away, putting things off, staying small, or distracting ourselves can bring immediate relief. The nervous system settles, briefly.

The problem is that short-term relief often comes with a long-term cost.
Avoidance teaches the brain that the situation was dangerous and needed escaping. Over time, anxiety grows and capacity shrinks.

The same pattern shows up in burnout. Pushing through, ignoring early warning signs, or constantly self-managing can keep things functioning, until it doesn’t.

The key question isn’t “Why do I keep doing this?” but “What is this giving me right now, and what is it costing me over time?”

Stress says: “I have too much to do.” Burnout says: “I have nothing left.”

They’re not the same.

Know the difference.

The stress response is the body’s automatic reaction to perceived threat or pressure. It’s fast, physical, and outside of conscious control.

When it’s activated, the body releases stress hormones and shifts resources toward protection. That’s why anxiety often shows up physically - tight chest, shallow breathing, muscle tension, nausea, fatigue.

This doesn’t mean something is wrong with your body. It means your system is doing what it’s designed to do.

Problems arise when the stress response stays switched on for too long. Without enough recovery, the body remains in a heightened state, which can contribute to ongoing anxiety, exhaustion, and burnout.

Understanding the stress response helps shift the focus from “What’s wrong with me?” to “What does my system need right now?”

Mental safety behaviours are things we do in our minds to try to prevent discomfort, mistakes, or uncertainty.

They often look like:
• replaying conversations
• analysing decisions over and over
• mentally rehearsing what might go wrong
• searching for certainty before acting

They feel productive, even responsible, but they usually keep us stuck.

These behaviours reduce anxiety in the short term, which is why the brain keeps using them. But in the long term, they maintain the loop by teaching the brain that thinking is necessary for safety.

The problem isn’t that you’re overthinking. The problem is that overthinking has become a safety strategy.

Understanding this shifts the question from “Why can’t I stop thinking?”
to “What am I trying to protect myself from right now?”

Feeling overwhelmed isn’t always a time-management problem. Often, it’s a capacity problem.

Capacity is how much your system can realistically handle at a given time. It’s affected by stress, sleep, health, emotional load, uncertainty, and how much recovery you’ve had.

You can be doing the same things you’ve always done and still feel overwhelmed,
because your capacity has changed.

The useful question isn’t always “How do I push through?”, it’s “What’s currently using my capacity, and what needs to change?”

Each Monday, I’ll be sharing clear, practical information about how your mind and nervous system work, and what can help when things feel difficult.
