Samir Zitouni was critically injured on Saturday night after he stepped in to protect passengers during a mass stabbing on a train.

His actions were heroic and I hope he recovers quickly and is out of hospital soon.

His name should be on everyone’s lips, his bravery commended. This is what good people do.

I know my ‘coming over here’ comment is flippant but I really do hope that people can see the idiocy of sweeping, bigoted generalisations about people based on their place of birth, skin colour or religious beliefs.

We are enriched as a country by embracing and celebrating our differences as well as our common humanity. Hooray for wonderful, selfless people like Samir and shame on every person who has picked apart the details of the suspect, hoping to make him less British or ‘one of us.’ Distancing ourselves from the root causes of violent crime is a sure way of dooming repetition.

I’ll do a proper post about the absolute JOYFEST that was last weekend’s but I wanted a particular one that focused on how immensely uplifting it was to be with these badass women.
Some of them, like my best and my aunty .shaw52 I’ve known all my life. Both of them would drop everything to help and are such wonderful champions of what I do. I’m so grateful.

And then some of the women I’ve met only through this festival- Jen, Abi and Laura- the founders- are walking the talk. They model how events like this can and should be run. Then there’s Sherene and who could not be better people to hang out with- yes, obviously they’re creative, passionate, clever wonder women but they’re also just really excellent company and I love seeing them. And then there’s the repeat customers! The girls who come back to this festival year after year and my perimenopausal brain dumps some other information in favour of remembering them. It’s so nice to hear about how their lives are going and what they are hoping to do next. Finally, it’s brilliant meeting new families, fellow contributors to the festival and all the lovely volunteers who make it one of the best events ever and a highlight of my year.

Oh crap, FINALLY finally, I can’t not mention the newest addition to the extended family- Queenie. 🐾 No-one makes you feel quite so welcome as a puppy whose excitement at your presence allows them to defy gravity and leave the floor all four paws at a time.

I cannot fully express what a great time I had. Thank you, all of you and to my uncle Hedley for the paperclip which I’ll treasure forever. X

EVERYONE DESERVES A CHANCE TO BE FREE

I created this fundraising pin several years ago and have had more made because it feels like we need, just as much as before, to have our eyes on Palestine. A ceasefire that’s already been broken and no plans for immediate action on aid or workable interim infrastructures mean the Palestinians are at just as much risk as they ever have been. A Trumpian desire to say ‘job done’ is an incredibly dangerous stance for the international community to adopt. So in my little way I wanted to be able to donate something to help in the current crisis and with the future hope. and and I’ll also hopefully raise enough for again too. I am so excited to be trading again at the wonderful this weekend.
Activities, workshops, stalls all aimed at girls 7-11 and their families. There’s a special SEND session on Saturday and there is a Pay-What-You-Can pricing structure so no-one is excluded. I’m developing the next pack of Natter Matters so I’ll be asking these brilliant children for their input.

Just a quick reminder of peace:
It is not just the absence of war,
It is not a one-time act and
It is not a prize to be won.

Those who seek it should be in it for the long haul, for liberation and freedom.

I truly hope that the announced ceasefire is the beginning of the latter, not a feathering of anyone’s ego-nest.

Hate is hate. What happened today in Manchester was horrific. A despicable act on the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar.
The rise in these acts targeting people across the religious spectrum is something that should highlight to us all the dangers of divisive, violent rhetoric.

Communities that thrive are doing so side by side, building trust and mutual understanding through foundations of equality and inclusion.

We don’t have to worship the same (or at all.) We don’t have to agree on Party politics. We don’t need to like the same stuff but we do have to fundamentally respect the right of another human being to exist in the same place as us. We are all us.

This quote was from a group of Muslim leaders in Manchester, sharing their grief and solidarity with the Jewish community.

Just a quick reminder (before Trump announces some Big Pharma ‘breakthrough’) that Autistic people don’t need to be fixed. They are not a problem, but an ableist society is and it should jump straight to the front of the queue if there are any cures being handed out.

Well here you go, this is what I want my country to represent. This is the unity I’m after. I want to feel proud of a country that welcomes and celebrates people for who they are and what they offer. I want us to be known for all these things:COMPASSION COMMUNITY AWARENESS EQUITY HOPE CREATIVITY OPENNESS EDUCATION FAIRNESS RESPECT KINDNESS INCLUSIVITY UNDERSTANDING COLLABORATION CELEBRATION CONNECTEDNESS HUMILITY DIVERSITY INNOVATION POSITIVITY JOY.

I looked up some ONS and census data about the nationality of people living in Britain and drew the flags if over 45,000 people of that nationality were living in the U.K. Some of it might be out of date and some might have had their flags drawn a bit wonkily. Sorry. And I drew an intersectional pride flag too. So there.
