Thinking of all of those who landed in Normandy on D day and remembering the 22442 who died during the Normandy invasion, 4 of whom were only 16. We have our freedom today because of them 🙏

Remembering all of the men from my village, Thrandeston, Suffolk, who died in WW1 and WW2. I have researched them all and have put the information into a booklet which is going to be in the church.

My grandfather Thomas Mitchell Somerville, born in Dundee in 1893. He was in the Royal Flying Corps in WW1 and was sent to the Somme where he was a flight mechanic maintaining aircraft there. My mother always said that he was part of the team who maintained the aircraft for McCudden. There were four McCudden brother who were all flying aces in WW1 and three of them were killed. I now need to research to see if I can find any of them serving where my grandfather was carrying out his service.

Thomas was a very quiet man who was very kind to everyone and loved his family. He was 6 feet tall and was quite an imposing figure. He worked in the jute mills at M and C Hills in Brook Street Dundee, part of the Dudhope Works. He was a foreman mechanic when he retired.

Do you have an ancestor who was killed fighting for their country? The British Legion have set up a Virtual Field of Remembrance and you can add their details as a tribute to them. There is a search facility to look for others who are already on there. I think this is a really lovely idea.

I have started a history project for Thrandeston, the village where I live. I decided to start by researching the 14 names on the war memorial in our village, 13 were from WW1 and 1 was from WW2. In WW1 I found 2 families lost 2 sons and 1 lost 3. As I researched their histories, I even found photos for 3 of the fallen. It was very poignant writing up their histories. They were so young and so brave. When their names are read out this year we really know so much more about them, they aren’t just names any more.
When I have done research for others, I have always found war veterans and in 2 cases found names on the Menin Gate at Ypres.

Today is the anniversary of VJ Day - Victory over Japan. Remembering all of those who fought in the Far East. Especially those who were prisoners of war and those who never came home. “The forgotten army”. My Dad was one of those who fought in Burma, he always said malaria saved him from getting caught!!

The Kohima Epitaph -

When you go home,
Tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow,
We gave our today

Have you ever wondered where your grandparents/great grandparents worked in the 1920's and what they did? I found that my grandmother worked in a textile printing company in Crayford, Kent. I even found the name of the company. She was also living with her brother as her parents had moved into an almshouse. I never knew any of this, but the 1921 census gave me this information.

Look at my fixed price tariffs or contact me for a price if you want something different. Very reasonable rates, £20 an hour plus certificate and expenses (i.e. petrol costs if archive visits are needed). If you want to start your own research, I can do lessons for £20 an hour with up to 4 people.
